Flipping enemy battlers in RMVX?

I'm using that side-view battle script, and I'm not really having any problems with it, but rather I'm having problems editing the RTP battlers.  You see, a few of them can be flipped horizontally to look like they're facing the characters on the right side of the screen, which would make them look better in the side-view system.  However, whenever I open one of the files in MSPaint to do a simple flip, some weird multicolored background shows up and I can't re-save the file without the background being there, essentially making the battler unusable.  I suspect that it was put into place to keep people from tampering with the battlers, but all I want to do is flip the damn things.  Is there any way to do this?

Try opening them in a program that supports transparencies.
You can use Photoshop, or the GIMP. I'll also take the Phyxer's spot and pimp Graphics Gale, as a superior sprite editing program to MSpaint.
