First attempt at spriting

I decided to start trying to sprite. I have done this once before, with no result, so this time I felt like trying actually sprite something to improve my skills in that field as well. I tossed in an old palette I had and began spriting. This is the current progress. I didn't even bother doing the hair because I just don't know how. If anyone can point me towards any hair tutorials that would be awesome.

Looking good for a start!  I'm no pixel artist, but if I were to give criticism I'd say the shading on the pants and shirt are too 'simple'.  Maybe some changes in pixel arrangement and an extra shade color?

Thanks! I will try experiment with using more colors from the palette rack, as you said, it's a very simple shading. As a first attempt, you cannot expect the best out of it, but I will try to improve as much as possible. Any tips is greatly appreciated, thanks a lot.

Oh, and also thanks for that link, seems to be quite a few interesting tutorials there.

Starters you have pillow shaded the poor shirt.
You need to remember your light source.(Above and to the left)
Isn't enough contrast between shades.
The outlines, strangely, are lighter than the other shades. They need to be darker or else there won't a good enough outline.
