finding equipment

hello.. I need help with rmxp Im still learning.. and I was wondering if there was a way to tell what the first person in the party has equipped... the way you can do it... is that you have to know what character is the first in the party.. but I wanna know if there is an easier way than making a really long event with conditional branches.. and I wanna use it maybe as a conditional branch..

example- if first person in party has a sword equipped than....

Long event with conditional branches, script, or always keep the same character in the front of the party. That's basically your choices.
