Favorite Japanese Supernatural Horror Thriller?

Well I just wanted to ask that question? If you aren't aware of what those are an example would be Ringu or Ju-On.

BTW, my favorite would have to be Ju-On

I would have to agree and say the original Ju-On. The Japanese sequel was pretty damn good too. NOT the watered down American remakes.

The japanese horror movement has had a good run, but now I think they need to spice it up a little bit because it's gotten itself stuck in a rut. That was how Saw and those other torture movies yanked the floor out from under them and now that's what everyone seems to want to see.

I would also keep my eye on horror films coming out of the UK, cause they've had some very good ones lately, particularly The Descent.

The Eye was a good horror film but the story was basically lifted from The Sixth Sense (a blind girl is given an operation to see and suddenly she sees dead people) which I thought did it better.

Ju-On is my favorite. The actress playing the Grudge has such a presence in that movie it is still eerie even after seeing it several times.

I never heard of the eye but I looked into it thinking of putting it on my netflix after i send back my others. Anyway the eye does sound like the Sixth Sense but it also sounds a bit like one of the stories in body bags where a dude's eye was transplanted and he began seeing odd things and wanted to kill his wife, he would later find the eye belonged to a serial killer.:blink02:

I love, err, am scared of Ju-On or the Grudge. When my friends and i first saw the 1st movie, we were like shouting like girls in the movie house. I still remember the creaking voice of the dead woman. dammit. the kid's look didnt scare me much, but the way he appears scares me, especially when im in the bathroom. I couldnt take a bath without first looking around the room... :(

The story is not so unique but acting is. :D

I think maybe the title should read, "Favourite Asian Supernatural Horror/Thriller", because you are really lessening the scope of some incredible films out on the market.

Anyway, unfortunately I haven't watched the original film, Ju-On, because I had rented it at the same time I bought The Grudge thinking that they were two different things. When I popped in the DVD, the starting house scenes were virtually the same in comparison to its American counterpart...so I turned it off (shame on me).

As far as Ringu is concerned, I also haven't seen that one (although I hear it is much better than The Ring). After watching the Americanised version of the film, it just really turned me off to the Japanese version along with its sequel. Maybe one of these days I'll give it a go.

Nonetheless, I would have to recommend seeing A Tale of Two Sisters, which is a Korean horror/thriller film. There is hardly any computer generated effects in the film (as I personally believe that too much really takes the sweetness out of the cake), but it still is able to maintain that certain something you would come to expect from a good horror film. It also isn't full of those slasher type elements you commonly see from films produced out in Hollywood (i.e. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hostel, See No Evil).

Just as warning for those of you who may want to see it, the ending is rather...confusing (even with the director's commentary). I've watched A Tale of Two Sisters three times and still don't completely understand what happens in the end.

Sorry i would change it but it won't allow well anyway i'm looking at A Tale of Two Sisters and i also found another movie that some people may want to look into it's "Cure". If you want the story put into context, then Wikipedia it.

BTW... It turns out that i rented the Eye 2 at Movie Gallery(Our local video store) before i ever heard about the first one. Despite me knowing nothing about the first the second seemed to go together pretty well.

For another Korean horror film you could look into Old Boy which really isn't supernatural but still ownz.

I haven't seen any original japanese horror movies, except for about 15 minutes of Uzumaki, which sucked.

EDIT: Forgot about Iria, although I haven't seen that since I was 10 or 11.

I did, however, see The Ring and The Grudge, and actually enjoyed both to an extent.

The thing about The Ring was that I thought there was only one really scary part (creepy closet dead girl) but that only got me because I wasn't ready for it. I actually enjoyed The Ring intellectually, for the plot rather than the "Scare-factor" which was practically non-existent.

The Grudge was entertaining enough, but again - I didn't find it especially scary. Just, well, interesting. It was pretty gruesome at parts, but certainly not the worst I've seen.

I'm going to go ahead and call Silent Hill my favorite. It's not Japanese you say? Sure it is! Also, I don't know quite why, but I frikkin LOVED that movie. The louder it is the better. (And don't even talk to me about it violating Silent Hill canon - as far as I'm concerned there IS NO Silent Hill canon.)

So yeah, I suck.

I just ordered Parasite Eve with english subs, so I will see how that goes.

Silent Hill actually has more of a European sensibility, which made it stand out in that way. Regarding the American Grudge, I didn't find it scary either...but you'll find that the Japanese version is one very different (and much more frightening) experience, even if the basic plot structure is almost identical between the two versions.

Well, technically, there is Silent Hill canon....but that's not what' we're talking about here!

Anyways, I liked the movie, but I wouldn't say I loved it myself. I mean, the special effects were awsome, and a lot of the scenes were gruesome (Much like the games). However, it didn't scare me that much, since the acting was just plain horrible, and some of the lines weren't exactly perfect either. Especially when...
Cybil told the monster to freeze before it shot acid at here
. If your a regular person and you see a f'in monster, you don't tell it to "freeze".You either flip out or you shoot at it many times.

But other then that, Pyramid Head rocked in the movie :D

For a series where every game has multiple endings that disagree entirely with each other, with none being the standard or "normal" ending, I think it's pretty much impossible to establish coherant canon within the series.

Didn't one of the endings of Silent Hill 2 have a sort of "The Matrix is real, and is run by monkeys" thing going on?
