I don't know why darkfire reported this with the reason it was in the wrong board, I mean the only other board it could go in in terms of what it is about is Literary Analysis, but it isn't something that requires analysis. What an odd thing to report for.
We have a "What are you reading?" thread in Literary Analysis which has nothign to do with analysis so what's the problem? I'd probably have done the same thing.

ANYWAY! I have a lot of favourite authors and books so I'll just name a few. I'm a big fan of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" series although he's not quite my favourite author. I don't have a "number 1" fav but H.G. Wells is one of my fav sci-fi writers. George Orwell's "1984" is easily one of my favourite books. And I've really enjoyed a lot of Stephen King's books although they're somewhat hit and miss I find.

I read this a couple of months ago. It was alright, up until the
flying telepathic zombies.
Then it just got too ludicrous for me. So yeah, I find it's good up until about halfway through, until King goes above and beyond the "Bizarre" line.

Fuckin' Herman Hesse. Everything he writes is mind expanding in it's own way. He writes such enlightening stuff. The cool part is that it's always some really deep fiction story with great hidden meanings.

yeah i was about to shuffle this off to Lit Analysis myself just because LA kind of covers anything reading/writing related and it is sorely lacking content.
but i won't filibuster anyone, so it can stay wherever it lies ~

anyway

read: every single book he's written after being hit by a van.

i've read probably around 90% of everything he's written (not entirely by choice ... i was lent them to read, while i was a receptionist, from a big SK fan, and i am too lazy to buy books or go to a library), and after 1999, he really went over the deep end. i mean, a lot of his stuff is very predictable, period ...

Stephen King checklist (if the book has nothing or very little from this checklist, it's actually his best or earliest work):
- is it set in maine?
- do the chars pass through maine or fondly mention maine at some point?
- is the main character a writer?
- is one of the secondary or important characters a writer?
- does it start referencing the crimson king like crazy at the end?
- is stephen king in it, himself?
- do the characters randomly start spewing out nonsensical onomatopoeias (i.e. "TAK!")?

*Note: the only exception which fills several of these points is Misery.

His best work is from the Seasons short stories (Apt Pupil, Shawshank Redemption) and Green Mile is pretty good, too. The Dark Tower series is just great up until after the 4th one, then it quickly tanks into being nearly unreadable. (note: everything after the van hit him).

anyway

I liked White Oleander by Janet Fitch quite a bit when i was a teenager. then Oprah touted it like crazy and they made it into a crappy movie, so :/.

I liked Dante's Inferno quite a bit, and The Iliad, but god I read them so long ago, I can barely remember the details.

I think I posted the WayR thread before the move to phpBB and it got moved there somehow. I'm not totally sure on that but whatevs.

I really like Micheal Chrichton, even though I've never got around to finishing any of his books  I also enjoyed Brad Meltzer's works quite a bit.

For starters, I absolutely love Douglas Adams. The Hitch-hiker's series is just pure comedic genius.

I'm also pretty fond of Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey series.

And, I also tend to fancy manga quite a bit.

Hmm.

Terry Pratchett
Discworld series (30something books), Johnny series, Only you can save mankind

Without a doubt Discworld is THE best series ever conceived. Unfortunately he came down with Altzheimers so is limiting himself to two books per year (lol). They are really great books, I recommend "Night Watch" and "Going Postal" for anyone who hasn't read any Discworld. Really really worth reading.

Grant/Naylor
Red Dwarf, Better than Life, Backwards, Last Human

Fantastic series, was better when they both wrote together (first two) rather than going in their seperate ways. The books and series are actually completely different, even though they follow similar storylines.

J. K. Rowling
Harry Potter

I don't give a fuck what anyone else says, this is a fantastic series and really worth reading. The plot twists all over the place, and while seemingly aimed at children it's actually like really in depth and yeah. I liked it.

I've read every book in the series at least twice except for the last one. I'm not gonna say that they're underrated because that would be just stupied but I think some people don't really know what they're talking about when they bash the books other than the religious fanatics.

Fun fact: Did you know the Vatican actually blessed the latest Harry Potter movie, saying it "clearly defined the difference between good and evil"?

I like to read books. I have a huge list of my favorite books. But books like Lord Of The Flies, The Rainbow, Invisible Man, Angle Of Repose, Heart Of Darkness are my most favorite books. They all are very interesting to read...

My favorite book of all time is 'the book thief'. It's great but kind of long. Read it and i promise you won't be disappointed.

My favourite book of all time is Fallen Dragon by Peter F. Hamilton.
Most of his work are pretty bland (and long) space operas, but this ones different.
Its a relatively short (800 pages or so) paperback novel, that's not part of his big "trilogies"

the scifi setting in the book is really engrossing, because it contemplates a world were space travel is not cost-effective, presenting a ramshackle, overpopulated Earth, controlled by companies that fund one-way "portal" colonies, wait for them to develop technologically, then attack the colony and seize its technological goods to sell back on Earth (so called asset-realization missions).

The story also tackles all sort's of moral and ethical questions through things the main character meets during his daily life, and (mostly) the various asset-realization missions he goes on.
