Fallout 3 - I gots questions ! [This is PS3 version JSYK]

Jason

Awesome Bro

So yeah, a quick back story, I got the game a while back, but thought it was pretty terrible in every way possible, but that was because I'd never follow the story, I kinda fucked up on my stats and SPECIAL, and just played as evil, killing anything that moved.

Now, my mate made me a deal, saying if I can get back into Fallout 3, he'll buy me the GOTY edition on Friday (Which has all 5 expansion packs included o.O), so I thought what the hell, I'll give it another shot...

And so far, still a little boring as such, but I've actually done SOMETHING;

I've escaped the vault without killing the Overseer
I've got Burke arrested AND killed him before he killed Simms (Sheriff), yay me !
I've defused the bomb
I've finished a sidequest to find the three leaky pipes (The one on top of the building took me forever to find !)
And I've just done the first sidequest for Moira Brown, where you have to get Radiation Poisoning, I got mine to 600 so I got the regeneration perk, pretty cool to be honest, although sort of unreal, haha.

And now I've got my house, and I've decided I wanna' buy stuff for it, but from the list, not sure which I should get, do they interfere with your stats at all ?

List of items for those of you that forgot;
- My First Infirmary
- Jukebox
- My First Laboratory
- Nuka-Cola Machine
- Workbench

So yeah, I got NO idea what any of them do without taking a wild guess (Which is probably right...), but should I just get one, or buy them all over time ?

And how about a theme for my shitrag of a house ?

Now, at the moment I've almost got 600 caps, somewhere around 590, and I can make a very slow income by finding and selling scrap metal to the guy who runs the Water place in Megaton, however, is there some other way to make faster money ? I don't really want to go adventuring for it just yet (Well, not too far away from Megaton), because I'm only level 3 and imagine I'll get slaughtered, but meh, we'll see...

GO !

well the Infirmary is the only thing there that is really useful, along with the laboratory. and the themes are a waste of money if you ask me

themes are useless; they're there for when you have a fuckton of money. and research them first because the only way to change them is by buying a new one. but i always get the love machine one because the other ones are pretty boring to look at and the love machine one has a giant honeymoon bed and sculptures of naked chicks everywhere, which is funny.

out of the choices :

- My First Infirmary - heals you without wait-time lost during sleep. very recommended. also removes rads and illnesses.

- Jukebox - plays music. you can't hear it very well. it's really just aesthetic. not recommended.

- My First Laboratory - cures addictions and can make new compounds for you, randomly (like rad-x, stimpaks, etc). kinda recommended, sort of.

- Nuka-Cola Machine - comes with free nuka-cola YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also you put cola in and you get cold cola back, which heals you like +20HP more or some silly thing. not very recommended. but it looks cool.

- Workbench - you can make weapons on here. but honestly there are tons of workbenches all over, and in megaton, you just go to moira's shop and make it there. if you're in tenpenny then you have to search around a little harder. so not very recommended but still useful if you really want to make shit in the privacy of your own shack???. IMO none of the shit you make on there is super useful, esp after you do the operation: anchorage! expansion pack (which, if you don't have it--is fairly badass).

So which would you recommend I buy, or should I just not bother ?

And also, my mate could be buying me the GOTY edition on Friday, depends if I can get into this lol, it's got all five expansion packs with it, and to be honest, I will admit that Operation Anchorage does look pretty cool, from the trailers atleast anyway, lol.

High Hopes

Don't get any themes, the Nuka-Cola machine, or the jukebox until you can make it rain. Make getting the infirmary your first priority. It's invaluable throughout the entire game, as you don't have to use stimpacks to regenerate your health if you're out of combat. The laboratory is good, as it can provide you combat aids such as Jet and Psycho, and can rid you of your addictions to those drugs. The workbench really isn't necessary, since there are loads of them scattered around. It's good if you can't find them. The workbench is good because it allows you to build the Railway Rifle. With precision aim, it can cripple limbs with one shot(3x Limb Damage), and it's also got a high critical multiplier. It's very accurate at close ranges.

To summarize: Get the infirmary first.

As a curiosity, are you playing on the PC or the Console? If you play on the PC, there's a great mod which will expand your Megaton house two-fold, that will make it a whole lot better with the pre-war theme, and has a basement you can buy that has an armory.

Yeah Ven, I realise you put them in your post, but you didn't exactly give a definite answer as to which I should choose, lol.

And TC (Yes, Top Cat !), you've given me the same recommendation which is to use the Infirmary, so I guess I'll get that, and as a side note, I'm playing the PS3 version (Hence the PS3 logo, lol)

Any ideas how much the Infirmary is ?

And how would I go about making more money ? I've got like, ALMOST 600 at the mo (For some reason, I didn't accept the 100 caps from Simms, pressed the wrong option, but oh well...)

(Gonna' change the thread title and just post all my questions here)

it's like 1200 caps i think, if i remember right. you can probably find the price on a faq somewhere but idt 600 is enough.

if you give yourself the perk that allows you to find more caps on average you'll be impressed with how much more money you'll make. after level 15 or so you'll never need money again.

if you like to play like a sniper, like using stealth to get everywhere (that's how i do it), after you finish the operation: anchorage mission you'll never need armor ever again. you'll see why. some people complain that the suit they give you breaks the game because it's so incredibly perfect. but idk i think it's great.

Well at the moment I put my skills up on Small Guns, Repair and Medicine (Those two help shit tons...)

And the next time I level up (To 4), I'm gonna' get the Educated perk, since it gives me an additional 3 points on level up, sounds pretty good to be honest.

What level is the perk for more money at ? I could really do with that, lol, and how many levels does it have ?

IDR how you get it ... some skills are unlockable via leveling, that one may be too, some are unlocked via stats upgrades. if you hit level 8 and it still doesnt pop up maybe look it up.

Really the best way I found to make money was via bartering. constantly pick shit up especially if it has .1 or 0 weight and go back to town and trade once your pack is full. As a side note, all ammo has a 0 weight so pick it up even if you don't have a gun to use it with. That way you have plenty for later, or you can trade it in for ammo you need,

Well I've just come off now (I've put in 7 hours in 2 days, lol, not bad for college nights)

But anyways, I found out that it's actually 1,700ish, which is quite alot... and I've managed to get up to 1000, but I'm REALLY struggling to find money now, since all of the merchants I've found, I've sold stuff to them and they have no money now !

I've also done another sidequest, well, done the first part, where you find the little kid and he's lost his dad in that city with all the fire ants, I've done the first bit where you find out his dads dead, loot the house (Well, I did...), loot the shed (Again, I did...), and gone back and told him, and now he wants me to stop it from happening again (I assume by finding a nest where they're coming from or something ?)

But either way, I need to make another 700+ bottlecaps to buy the Infirmary, but THEN I need to give 100 bottlecaps to Moriarty so he can tell me where my dad is, the robbing git.

I've already gone to Super Duper Mart, killed everyone in and around it, looted it from top to bottom (It's gay, there's vids on the net of people getting the Powerglove from there, but it wasn't there for me !), and when the second set of raiders came in, I killed them too. You can get quite a few bottlecaps for their armour... IF YOU CAN FIND SOMEONE WITH ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY 'EM !

Also, I said no to the quest for Moira to go into Super Duper Mart, that was BEFORE I did the radiation experiment, cause I didn't know where it was, I assumed it'd be far away (Although I did go to it the last time I played, AGES ago...), and now I've gotta' defuse a detonated mine somewhere up north that looks like it'll take the piss to get to without any hard encounters... But back to what I was asking, does this mean I can't do the Super Duper Mart quest for her anymore ? I hope not, I wanna' do it now I realise how close it is, lol.

Stash your crap in the house if they can't buy it, and trade for stimpaks since you can never have enough of those. There are also alternative methods to find out more on daddy, look around. And tbh I don't think you need the Infirmary before you're even working on the quest, I think the merchants get richer as the story progresses as well.

And yes the stealth armor is fun-fun, especially combined with the magic energy sword from the same expansion. It's just plain funny to crawl around turning everything to a pile of blue dust without anyone noticing :D

Fallout 3 is kind of cool, but it got pretty boring for me once the novelty of running around in a post apocalyptic world that makes fun of itself wore off.

The suggestion I would have for making money is use VATS and when you level up try to get the skills that pertain to VATS, accuracy and critical hits. When I was playing, bullets we like the biggest drain on my money. Once I started building my character towards preserving bullets I started gaining much more money. The same skills also protect your HP by killing before enemies can fire, so you'll save money on stimpaks too. By doing this, and generally being a cheap bastard I ended up with a constant stash of about 1400 or more at all times.

I would also suggest that you take extra time to plan ahead what sort of dungeon loot you are searching for before you go into a place. Try to get the best weight to price ratio, and you definitely want to take the time to pick up items even if you will never use them. I never use mines, but mines are worth a bunch (like 20 caps each?) so I always pick up and keep mines since they are light but give you lots of money.

Also, in case you get into trouble you can do what I do and keep a few valuable items in your house's containers so that way you forget that you have those assets until you accidentally spend all your money and you are out of stimpaks and ammo. Just sell the loot you kept aside in an emergency.

this thread is super old; i sincerely doubt he's still having trouble w/ it ... @_@

Yeah. But wheres the fallout3 topic? This one could do nicely. Its still a pretty damn good game, if you take it for what it is, and not obsess about what it is not. Its really satisfying to explore and kill stuff in this game.

Actually Ven, all honesty aside, I HAVE still been struggling trying to make cash on it, lol, although I think I'm over halfway through the game now anyways, lol, not putting any spoilers, but meh.

I DO have more caps now, I usually have around 3-4k on average, although the highest I've had is 5.2k caps, and I'm never low on bullets or stimpacks, as I get them for free, sometimes making a couple of caps extra, sometimes losing them, cause instead of just buying 'em, I'll run outside, kill some random bandit, take his armour and weapon, and trade them for what I need, lol...

... The one problem I've had, is that I STILL CAN'T FIND A FUCKING POWERFIST I WANT ONE SO MUCH...

... Yeah.

Oh and a PS. Operation Anchorage is a REALLY great DLC... although it's short, it's great.

We might as well keep this open and turn it into a Fallout 3 thread or something, since it's sort of been revived, lol.
