End of the world?

OK... I've seen a lot of people and and articles saying it's almost our time recently. The majority of most religious people seem to think we're coming to an end. Most scientists also give us less than 50-60 years. And there is also the pessimists who say any day now. There was the particle accelerator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider) that people seem to think that will cause the end of the Earth and the Mayan calender (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/20 ... 2012_n.htm) that ends on 21/12/2012, and the hundreds of wars and rampant genocide, and the ice caps melting, and all sorts of potentially catastrophic events... On top of this there was predictions mad by people who believe they are psychics and according to the Book of Revelations this should be our last millennium. The purpose of this topic is to see what everybody thinks about this. Does anybody believe that the world is coming to an end? Does anybody think that there is no end to humanity? Does anybody think we can stop it? I'm just kind of curious stuff like this is almost always good to see what people really think and it's usually pretty fun to read.

~*!DISCLAIMER!*~ I am not saying that anybody is wrong or right, please try not to post accusations or claims that somebody is wrong without some sort of proof (IE: a link to an article or something)

The Mayan Calender ends on the 21/12/2012 not the 12th.
Says so in the link you supplied and pretty much every where else.
Just thought Id point that out.

But yeah this whole end of the world thing interests me too.
Its been part of a few of the ancient civilizations prophecy's,
So it will be interesting to see what happens as time goes on.

Prophecies and stories about the end of the world have been around as long as humans have existed. It's one of those things that has the endless ability to fascinate and intrigue us at the same time, like what happens to us when we die. And at the same time it terrifies us.

We've made predictions about the "end of the world" countless times before. Many of these predictions have stated that we should already be gone by now. Yet we're still alive and kickin'.

Yeah, things don't look too great right now. We've always got the possibility of nuclear holocaust, asteroids and other extraterrestrial objects pose a constant threat, or climate change could very well be our doom. There are literally hundreds of ways we could be wiped off the face of the earth. (there's a whole website devoted to these predictions-some weirder than others. Check it out at http://www.exitmundi.nl/ if you want to)

But you have to take it with a grain of salt. There's no use constantly worrying about this kind of stuff, and it's definitely not good for you. Humans have been here for thousands of years, and we could've been taken out by a whole slew of possibilities by now. But like I said, we're still here, and it's my belief that we will be for a long time to come.

That doesn't mean that we won't be killed soon. I'm only human, I can't tell when. Nobody can know when, or if it'll even happen. No matter how hard we try, our predictions can be only that-predictions. Educated guesses. All those prophecies that have been passed on for centuries? Just stories. Fiction. Based on little to no logic or physical evidence.

We could be gone next year. In a month. Tomorrow. Or even in the next five minutes. But the chances of the world ending in this lifetime is extremely small, so it's not even something I'd worry about. There are bigger things that we have to worry about. Like the economic crisis, or foreign affairs. Or whether or not I'll get a job this summer. Or what my mom will do when she finds out about the mess I made in the kitchen. That terrifies me more than any apocalypse, I think. *shudder*

Sorry fixed that,
Very profound Dadevster...

I know the feeling

actually, I believe in this too, i've seen many catastrophy and global disasters lately, and um sure it'll end anytime soon (hope it wouldn't, I love life)

I made a thread about this too, but got some bullshit...

The way I see it if the world does end we won't know about it anyway (we'll be dead) so there's no point worrying about it or finding out when it'll happen. One argument would be that if we knew when it was going to end we could do some cool shit with our lives; but I'd say in that case you're wasting your life if you feel it could be more eventful.

How many people, organisations an religions said that the world would end in 2000? Nothing happened. The only date i'm intrested in is 21/21/2012, not that i believe in it or anything.

None actually.

It was just individuals who were attaching themselves to the hype that was building up as the numbers changed. :)

Why worry? If we die, we die, we go to heaven/hell, who knows?

Also, the Bible said nothing about the end of the world, except it WILL happen and how it will happen, but not WHEN. I dunno about other religions.

There is a bazillions of possibilities on how the world is gonna end, just like death.

I would say that getting killed by a kid for being a white is rather more possible than the world ending.

Oh and a nuclear holocaust ISN'T gonna happen, thats what I believe.

Oh, and I think it will stay for another gazillion years.

The book of Revelations speaks of a book with 7 seals. Each seal is supposed to represent a thousand years. Many people believe that our 7 thousand years are up. Scientists and many religious figures have match a millennium with what happened in the bible. for example it said the 6th seal was war... The last millennium was full of war, just recently was Vietnam, WWII, and WWII... It says this millennium will have disasters, Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami in Sri Lanka, and I can't think of others off the top of my head but they're there... Not saying the bible is right or wrong, but it's there, either coincidence or somethings going down...

*facedesk*

There was wars in the millennium before the "last" one. There were also disasters in the one which is apparently supposed to be all about the warz.

Could you provide an example of a decent scientist who believes this. An, actually, a decent religious figure (purely because I want to know how you're defining it).

Furthermore, I'd like to know why the Book of Revelation is considered an accurate and imminent prophecy and not the extended drug trip of a first century bishop?

We're probably going to go through Hell and back in the coming years, but it doesn't mean the Apocalypse is due.

Not saying the bible is right or wrong

Don't try and hedge your bets now. You've placed all your cards firmly on the table. :P

You can get killed for being a white? Shit man I better watch out.

No, not really, but a black just flamed me from being a white when I'm a Chinese.

I bet you've been flamed plenty of times, and judging from that picture, you've made many guys dead.

Will the world end in 2012? Let's hope not.

But then again, define "world". Existence in general? The universe? Or just earth? Or just human life?

There is a lot of hype surrounding 2012 and it definitely seems more viable than 2000. If anything drastic actually happens, it'll be the new ice age. If shit does happen, chances are a few people will survive. Then it's restarting the human "race" again.

Race: The race to develop space travel and be able to live on other planets as to avoid extinction.

I hope the world doesn't end in 2012. I hope that we beat it out. One day the sun will die, just like every other star. By then let's hope we have a new solar system, or many solar systems, even.

But then again there's a lot of horrible people everywhere around so maybe it's better off we mostly die off and try again.

I think the world will end in 2012. It's so much to worry about now. I've heard we could be going to nuclear war soon. North korea and Iran is trying so hard to nuke someone. All it takes is one nuke, and everone starts nuking the hell outta each other. FACT: 100 teratons can split this planet into 2.

NASA says there could be giant solar flares headed for earth, giant meteors bigger than texas headed for us, and Earth could be in a path of a hypernova explosion. Yeah umm, a Hypernova can destroy our entire solar system.

Global warming could flood our planet and spawn hurricanes larger than north america. There are even clues of super volcanoes ready to blow. They can blanket our planet with toxic gases and change the PH levels of our oceans into that of battery acid.

I remember hearing about some science guys in europe trying to test a large magnetic particle machine that may create small blackholes and destroy the earth (CNN). Yep, everything is trying to kill us. I think 2012 is gonna be a blast.
