Eastwest Sounds?

I don't really know the difference between those. I'm using the Silver Edition myself and it suit my needs.

I would've pick Gold Edition, of those two, to be on the safe side.

Personally, I use Gold, but the product has gotten more affordable. I'd go for the package deal. I don't know if that's the one that includes the Choirs, Colossus, and a few other kits, but that's the one I was planning on purchasing.

Nah, I believe it's just the Orchestra..

Which is fine with me! :thumb:

I figure, why would I get Gold though, if Platinum is only 20 bucks more? xD

Actually, now that I looked at it..

I had no idea Colosus was a jazz set! I could really use one of those. O_O;

Edit: I think Ima go for Goliath and the Platinum... thanks for all the help(?)

Yeah, I also forgot to mention I'm gonna get a 250GB external harddrive. =D

Anyways, what sucks is that Goliath doesn't use Kontakt, so Ima have to settle for collosus for finale compatability. x.x
w/e though, cause they're practically the same thing, excluding about 8GB of extras.

Thats one of the only reasons I hate Finale because of its shitty VST compatability. Im assuming you are using Finale 08's interface?

Yeah, I got '08 last year for Christmas.

As long as I get somthing better than the piece of shit Garritan sounds that come with it.
(Finale's ambience reverb doesn't help (btw I figured how to configure it =D) )

Anyways, I think I'll be much happier with these sounds.  Anyone else here try to use VSTs with Finale?
Anything I should know about installation, configuration, compatability with dynamics, etc.?

The difference between gold and platinum is Platinum gets C,F, and S mic positions while gold only has one position for each instrument. And yes, Goliath is like a beefed up GM set.

^I heard that the additional mic positions eat up a lot of computer power - is there a way to turn them off when using Platinum? Or, just to (with whichever method) make it consume the same computing power as Gold?

Ooh. Well that kinda sucks. xD
My compy only has like... 1.7GB of RAM.

Are the sounds in Goliath any better than in Collosus however?

I think I've changed my mind, based on all this extra info... Since it will have what I need and more, I'm probably gonna go for the Complete Composer's Collection.

I know Reives got it recently...

How is it?  =D
Oh, and do the Choirs really sing the words you type? O_O

I haven't had the chance to fully go into it yet due to my busy schedule as of late, but from the little I've tried I still have to say that it really is worth it. The sound quality is astounding (especially for a long-time GPO farmboy like me), and the variety is overwhelming (to the point of me having no idea which of the 10 billion violins to use).

To be honest, it actually feels like cheating for me. When I write a piece and play it with GPO and it sounds decent, I have this feeling of accomplishment - but when I write something and play it with EWQL and it sounds decent, it feels like it's expected to be. The sound quality just makes about anything that makes musical sense sound good. But then again, that's probably just because I'm still overwhelmed by its sound compared to what I'm used to.

Here's a short WIP clip of my second try at composing with its sounds:

As for the choir thingy: there is the program "Word Builder" that makes the choir sing words; not perfectly but is still very cool. I haven't gotten to learn it myself yet though.

Heh.  That demo was good... I'm amazed by the difference in quality between GPO and this.

If I could Ima change this into a GPO dislike thread.
I'm starting to get frustrated by how weak the well.. everything is.
The fact that I can't even write a song because it doesn't sound good enough to me is kind of annoying. O_o...

Eastwest is actually gonna sound like a band, and not just high quality midi.  I honestly don't think GPO sounds very real.
Although, I've been using Finale's GPO.. Wonder if that's part of my problem. xD

I realize this a little old, but GPO can do some good stuff, you just have to know how to work it. Using it in Finale, or the finale versions or whatnot is not particularly ideal since to get the best sound out of it you need to do a fair bit of work with Mod wheel, volume, to give it life and expression. Some of the samples do not sound as "big" or cinematic as the East West samples - which is why using Garritan exclusively might not be the best option for everyone. Personally I use GPO and East West libraries together.

Well actually, all of the VST configs like the modwheel and dynamics ARE usable.

I know the VST configs are usable - I'm not talking about realtime configurations. In a sequencer you have a piano roll which lets you control all of these settings on the MIDI track itself and is how you do the dynamics to get a realistic performance. You have to really lay down a whole track of "CC1" data and draw out "hills" (See the tutorials on the string garritan website to see what I mean)I haven't used the newest version of Finale so I'm not sure with the deal is. Either way, my point was that GPO can get a good sound if you spend some time working it all out. It's not as "out of the box" as EWQL.

Chris

Having them both now, I still seem to prefer GPO's flute over EWQL's. It just seems to be much "smoother" to me. But that might be because I haven't gotten into the process of modding it much yet.
