Dream Theater? Anybody?

I found them about a month ago, and since have got all of their albums and songs. Man I love them! They are so awesome!

I like metal, and they are metal, but with that lyrical... instrumental.. twist!

My favorite song (one of them) is instrumeledy (it is in Youtube if you want to watch it, and it looks and sounds great)

I also like Another Day, Hollow Years, and Matter of Time.

So does anyone else here like/love them?

Awesome Bro

Other than Travis Barker, Michael Portnoy is easily my favourite drummer. I'm not a massive fan of the band's style, But his drumming is so fast and powerful! It makes me do a sex wee.

Yes!
Watch them on youtube, theye are all in concert and stuff, and they are awesome!

I like the rock-opera typeness of it, kinda almost like opera-metal or something...
Blind Guardian also, is like that (I love "And then there was Silence!")

I could take or leave most Dream Theater songs, mostly because I hate the sound of LaBrie's voice. There's no denying their talent though. It's almost nauseating.

I think they're a really cool band, the composition is amazing, dunno why but LaBrie reminds me of Robbie Williams vocalwise XD - but damn some of their songs are long!! (Change of Seasons, 23 mins 08 sec) but I like that, and they're a great band, not my favourite style of music but they're worth a listen :)

Dream Theater is an amazing band. You should also check out Liquid Tension Experiment. It is an instrumental side project of three of the Dream Theater band members. Really good stuff.

And another album to check out is Ayreon - The Human Equation. That album is one of my favorite albums of all time.

It is a concept album, and it features the vocal talents of:

James LaBrie (Dream Theater)
Mikael Akerfeld (Opeth)
Devin Townsend (Devin Townsend Band, Strapping Young Lad)
Devon Graves (Dead Soul Tribe)
Eric Clayton (Saviour Machine)
Irene Jansen (Star One)
Magnus Ekwall (The Quill)
Heather Findlay (Mostly Autumn)
Mike Baker (Shadow Gallery)
Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion, Elfonia)

Even if you hate LaBrie's voice, check this album out!

The concept of the album is a man gets into a mysterious car accident and is in a coma, with no medical reason he should be in one. The album takes place both in the real world and the delusion inside the man's head. Each vocalist actually represents a different emotion (Mikael Akerfeld is Fear, Devin Townsend is Rage, etc.). Throughout the album, you come to find out more about the characters and just what happened on the day the main character (voiced by LaBrie) crashed.

It is beautifully done. It is mostly clean vocals, with just a few growling vocals thrown in.

Tracks of interest:

Track 03: Day Three: Pain
Track 12: Day Twelve: Trauma
Track 20: Day Twenty: Confrontation

Flo Mournier of Crytopsy (Poor quality video). The cameraman can't get a really good shot of his feet, but he has 4 bass drum pedals and uses a "heel-toe" motion so he can still use a double-bass drum beat while operating his high-hat pedal.

Real drummers wear pants.

dream theater's... tolerable. i'm not a huge fan of TIME SIGNATURE MASTURBATION (well, i am, but only for like certain bands) and the lyrics are AWFUL. liquid tension experiment is pretty badass though.

also, while portnoy is undoubtedly REALLY TALENTED, i loathe him as a person.

a mate of mine i used to do karate with did his form to one of their songs... they have good music.. quite good and they are original... the only thing is that they are against mainstream, so their CD's are super expensive.. but worth the dollars :P hehe

Dude, itunes. Need I say more?
They have a lot of singe on there, and as far as I know... they are priced just the same as all the other ones on there. (99 cents)

well it costs me $1.39 on itunes for songs... buti'm in australia... so i'm assuming the exchange rates are the difference in this... so yeah, either way, it's not expensive

In response to might be a couch (Tel?), I'm personally not a fan of DT's (recent) songwriting either... and though the instrumental prowess is definitely there, it's not implemented very creatively. It's been hard for me to listen to them these days actually. I like more subtle stuff than what they do quite a bit more.

And @NexS: Against mainstream? As far as progressive metal goes, they're fairly mainstream. They're not Tool or anything, but they're pretty well known, at least among alot of people I know. Much more so than bands like Sylvan or Andromeda.

Anyway, I used to listen to DT alot, but my enthusiasm for them has waned. I find Liquid Tension Experiment still fairly interesting though. But alot of that is just the Tony Levin presence in the group.

by mainstream i meant regular stores selling their wares... like my mate who has the cd said it cost like $80 or something crazy like that for the album 6 degrees of inner turbulance.. but yeah...

What?!? $80? I bought that album for $18 at a "regular store" (whatever that's supposed to mean)! That sounds like one of two things, either your friend was exaggerating, or the prices in Australia are ALOT higher for music. In cases like that, I would say it's better to buy it on Amazon and have it shipped by mail... because $80 is fucking ridiculous. Dream Theater or no.

When Metropolis Pt 2 - Scenes From a Memory came out, this guy at school bought it and let me borrow it (well, made me borrow it, I was reluctant =p). I'm glad I did, I've liked them ever since and now have their discography. Scenes from a memory is still my favourite, though Octavarium/Liquid Tension exp is pretty awesome.

I got a copy of Scenes From New York; a DVD of them playing Scenes From a Memory in it's entirety, totally awesome <3
