Dream of Roses w/Demo!

Okay, this is my first ever demo, so hopefully I won't screw it up too badly.

The project is called 'Dream of Roses', a little something I've been working on for about a year after my last project....um...went to that RPG Toolkit in the sky, as it were.

---------------------------------------------
" In the Beginning, there was naught but the Aether, roiling nothingness in a sea of infinite chaos. And from the Aether, the Goddess Cygnesse rose, full-grown and fully of Glory, and She swept Her Arms across the chaos, and split the Darkness and the Light, and She called the Darkness Night, and the Light She called Day, and to signal one's passing into the other, She hung the Moon over the Night, and the Sun over the Day. And on the second Day, She formed the World from out the Aether, carving the chasms and raising the mountains, scouring the deserts and freezing the hinters. And the Night came, and broke into Day, and on the Third Day, Cygnesse lifted the Sky over the World, that the Sun and the Moon would not meet, and keep Day and Night seperate. And in the Land of the World, She filled in the Oceans and Seas, trickling down into Rivers and Streams, pooling into Lakes. And Night came and broke into Day, and on the fourth Day, She made the creatures of the Land, the serpents of the Dust, the fish of the Seas, and the birds of the Sky, naming each in Her own way, and setting them to their domain. And Night came, and broke into Day, and on the Fifth Day, She made Men, taking their form from the apes of the Trees, and set them upon a Golden Throne, to rule this new World. And among the Men, she placed Prophets, those who heard the Voice of Cygnesse, and through them told how She would depart for the Heavens."
- From the Books of Xeogenis, circa 782, Bronze Calander.

The thought of life without their beloved Goddess frightened the primitive Men, and so, to ensure Her return, five towers were built, and inside each, special children were abandoned, to act as living Beacons to the Goddess to return to Her creation. And to protect each Tower and each Beacon, vast nations were built around the Towers, In time, these nations gave way to great and mighty kingdoms, each taking it's name from a local word for rose, the universal symbol of the Goddess. The Rulers of the Five Kingdoms agreed that the most important thing in all the world was bringing back the Goddess, and so there have been no wars.

However, there is a legend that an ancient king, intent on gaining the favour of the Goddess, made a deal with....someTHING else, and unleashed great beasts upon the world that were not touched by Her Hand, and so were hostile to Her and the Towers. To combat these monsters, each Kingdom formed armies, not to seek out and destroy the monsters, but to protect those they attack. Not a reactionary force, or a military force, but a defensive force. These brave and noble warriors are called Knight. and among these Knights, is a sad and lonely youth named Wynn, retainer to the King of the Land of Druuh....

This is not his story, rather the story of his story.......

Wynn AlrauneWeiss, Knight of the White Rose
Age: 25 Aptitude: Holy Weapon: Sword Occupation: Retainer to King Soloma of Druuh
Personality: Loyal, lacking confidence, but still capable. Resourceful, kind. Somewhat sad. He places duty ahead of anything else, becoming the consummate soldier, at the expense of his own happiness. He is originally from Amynn, but following the massacre of his home village, he has relocated to Druuh. Despite the world's view and placement of importance on religion, he finds himself doubting faith, due to his tragic past.

Victoria Abel Roth Lemnear-Resaad, Knight of the Blue Rose
Age: 23 Aptitude: Water, Healing Magic Weapon: Saber Occupation: Soldier in the Army of Amynn.
Personality: Solemn, serious, except in battle, when her Swordsong takes over her heart and her true self emerges. She resents not being a full soldier, only being an auxilliary, and wishes more then anything else that her superiors would show her even a little respect.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w95/ ... /Reign.png[/img]

Reign von Schreider, Knight of the Red Rose
Age: 36 Aptitude: Fire Weapon: Twin Swords Occupation: Former Raider for the King of Hynerne, now Innkeeper.
Personality: Aloof, distant, unconcerned about others. However, very loyal to his friends. He was once like Wynn is now,
focused only on doing his duty. However, something happened to him that made him change his views on his life, and he fled
from the Hynernian army.

Mick
Age: 54 Aptitude: Earth, Buffing Magic Weapon: Fists Occupation: Wandering Pit Fighter
Personality: Shy, almost mute with new people, but fiercley protective of his foster daughter. His strength is near epic, and he seems almost godlike in his fighting prowess. Besides his concern for his daughter Elsabet''s safety, his main weakness is food and drink. Most folk know to avoid making Mick angry, and those that don't....LEARN.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w95/ ... lsabet.png[/img]

Elsabet' Cammapillono
Age: 14 Aptitude: Wind, Weapon: Feet Occupation: Mick's manager.
Personality: airy, not too bright, but very business savvy. Almost too brave for her own good. Often gets into trouble with her mouth and snarky comments. Her number one goal in the world is to make Mick a cultural icon, shamelessly promoting him until it's almost annoying. She doesn't remember her birth parents, or how she came to be in Mick's care, but she seems to be enjoying life way too much to even think about it.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w95/ ... althea.png[/img]

Lady Amalthea
Age: 20 Aptitude: Lost Magicks Weapon: Bauble Occupation: Sole Resident of the Tower of Alchaen.
Personality: Gentle, sad, kind, and brave. She has lived alone all her life, learning human speech from watching the parishoners gather at the foot of her Tower. She seems awkward in social concerns, but despite her isolated upbringing,
the natural magics that flow through her tend to nudge her more towards a gentle lifestyle then one might normally expect from a feral child. She was abandoned in the Tower of Alchaen by her parents, who were told that she was a Beacon of the Goddess Cygnesse by a mysterious seer. As a Beacon, she is expected to live a 'clean and untainted life', which basically means no human contact. But when some mysterious force begins destroying Towers across the world King Soloma sends Wynn to the Tower of Alchaen to make sure Lady Amalthea is safe. She hasn't been outside the Tower since she was a very small child, and is easily overwhemled by the enormity of the world, and often confused by social norms. Despite this, she is still every inch the graceful lady.

EDIT: Alright, so I've redone the whole damned thing, hopefully it works now.

Please, please, please cut down on those spoilers! That is waytoofuckmany spoilers. It's not "clean", or "neat", nor is it "tidy" to use that many spoilers. It just makes it a pain to read.

First things first. I have to be honest, I didn't play the demo. The project itself isn't too appealing all in all. Oh, and one spoiler per screenshot is very uneccessary.

The plot is vary vague. mainly, you have a lot of details from ancient books and how man needs a Goddess. Yeah, at least that part doesn't lack insight, but if you look at it:
However, there is a legend that an ancient king, intent on gaining the favour of the Goddess, made a deal with....someTHING else, and unleashed great beasts upon the world that were not touched by Her Hand, and so were hostile to Her and the Towers. To combat these monsters, each Kingdom formed armies, not to seek out and destroy the monsters, but to protect those they attack.
Is this your plot? Do we get to see excessive fighting against some sort of beasts, just to protect some innocent villagers? There's got to be something else to it. The plot described here looks more like a story than a plot to me.

I'm not going to cover the characters, but let's get into that mapping.

The throne room. Yeah. You just added two sets of walls on top of each other. The map tricks the eye into looking as if there's an extra level rising up from the stairs. Also, there's a little too much room on the sides. Try to clean up uneccessary space.

The mountain. Yeah, you used a panoroma, but it's a panoroma that looks like real life. How does a photograph blend well with pixel art? I mean, seriously.

General for your mapping: add more detail! Do not add too much detail, but add a natural amount of detail, depending on the map's setting. For instance, why is the mountain grass so flat? Did someone cut it down so like a millionaire's lawn and leaving it to look dull? Do caves really get cleaned up so there's only a select few rocks around and some leaves?

When it comes down to it, the project in its current state is very badly presented. First you should improve the setup of your thread, but while you're at it, try to spice up the content as well. If you put your mind to it, I reckon you will be able to make things much, much better.

Cheers,
Fire

This is 128mb for a demo? Good thing I have a decent DL speed.
If the demo doesn't do it's 128mb justice I will write a letter of complaint to you  :pissed:
EDIT:
Well, your game is broken. It only extracts the Audio folder and nothing else, so I actually downloaded 132 MB of music and sound effects.
I now hate you.

Audio Folder - 132 MB

I have this to say:

The extraction crashes at c_food apparently.

^

o______O

Yea, 'cause placing ALL the Hyms of Fate in the BGS folder is really logical.

On a more serious note, is that Cricket.mp3 license-free? LOL.~

Just for the OP's information: When you compile a gamedisk, the entire game cannot be bigger than 128 MB. RMXP won't compile any more than that. Your only solution is to take away the audio, compile the gamedisk, extract the gamedisk and paste the audio into the extracted data then pack it into an archive. Makes sense?

Got it. I'll try this again. Thanks.
