Discrimination against who people see you as.

Sorry but those -are- two completely different people. The fact that you omitted details about the person in each description gives us a different impression of the person, not our own personal prejudice.

Its natural for human beings to fill in the gaps about things we don't understand. If you come up to me, i'll probably have a pretty quick general idea of who you are based on what you look like, how you walk, how you smell, etc. Then when you start talking, that might change drastically, I dont know until you do.

Aside from being male, there is nothing the same about those two people, so why would anyone in their right mind have any reason to believe they are the same person?

TREG He wasn't trying to describe two different people, he was trying to describe himself in two different ways. However in doing so, he ended up describing two different people.

He did that to prove his point. Now what if he fully described himself in one paragraph and stated that he plays rpgs/is a DJ? You still wouldn't believe him?

If you can't believe that, you're very close-minded.

[offtopiclol]Heeey, where are all the Nigerians coming from? What are you (Yoruba, Ibo, Hausa?)? ;)[/offtopiclol]

It's not so much discrimination but stereotyping, and yes people do it all the time. In fact everyone uses the fact that everyone else stereotypes to their advantage.

If you're being interviewed for a job, are you going to walk in wearing your pajamas, bed hair on crack and chewing gum loudly? Heck no, the interviewer will take one look at you and not give you the job. However, if you come in a neatly ironed business suit, the interviewer will automatically look at you differently. You'll have a bigger chance at getting the job.

It's not discrimination. The interviewer will have to try to get the most complete picture of you that is possible in a short amount of time. They will take all sorts of "shallow" clues from your person to try to get that image. It's a method of survival.

On the internet, you see this a lot. People assume everyone they meet is male until they say otherwise. It shouldn't bother you really. I find it funny the amount of times that I got the "You're a GIRL?!" remarks from people online. I find it even funnier when I get "You're BLACK?! I thought you were white and blonde!" remarks.

Heck, depending on the situation I sort of find myself changing to the enviroment. The way I act at home and at class is different. The way I act with one group of friends, and maybe another group of friends who like completely different things.

Am I being fake? No. It's all me, but there's a place for everything imo.

Yeah, this is just another post that basically boils down to why do people stereotype.

The fact of the matter is, if you are discussing (fundamentally) rpg production on a website with people you will never personally meet, they don't really need to know much about your social life outside rmxp. When and if I describe myself in any way on this site, I just stick to things that apply to this site.

I assume people will instantly stereotype me as a bit of a geek, as we all do because we are making homemade rpg's. Society in general would consider that geeky, and that's fine with me because it doesn't affect me in anyway.

I also was the captain of my college football/soccer team, go out clubbing at least twice a week and have a stable girlfriend, but as it doesn't usually apply to making rpg's I don't bother mentioning it until now. Plus i wouldn't want to be percieved in the opposite direction as like being some sort of "jock" either.

So ultimately, yes, we are all born and built as an individual but does it really affect you if people think you are a 15 year old nerd... It's not going to affect you in life now is it.

If you can't believe that, you're very close-minded.

If he said "Here are two descriptions, are they are the same person" and gave me those that he did in the OP, i'd say "No." If he gave them to me as one description and said "This is me, do you believe me?" I'd say Yes. But I have no reason to believe they are the same person seperately because they specifically omit the details that overlap their personas.

Meh...I've felt I've been judged the whole time I was on rmxp, I get this feeling that alot of people dislike me(dunno why, I dont say nothing to noone). I mean...What could I have done, I don't say anything to piss anyone off(unless provoked). And I don't bother with anything..

Here's a hint: you're easily provoked. I don't know what you did in the first place to get someone to bother provoking you, but it happened, and you went for it, and then you fell into a downward spiral of peer-agression.

Anyways kids, as to this topic I'm going to have to say: Deal with it. I get stereotyped constantly as a drug using hippie who goes to parties CONSTANTLY. And to be honest, I haven't gone to a party in about 3 years, and that was only because my brother had a party at my house. I don't do drugs, I'm actually pretty smart. But does this get me down that people will instantly lump me with some random group and assume that's who I am? No, because everyone does it. If you saw me, you'd think "hey he smokes, drinks and probably does drugs" because I have long hair, wear pretty baggy and torn up clothes, and have a very unkempt beard. It's not a bad thing, it's a NATURAL thing.

If I see a black dude wearing a du-rag and some baggy clothes, yes I'm going to assume he listens to rap. He probably doees not have corn-rows under that du-rag, and the du-rag has evolved into a symbol of 'gangster', it'd be foolish to just think otherwise and act like you don't know people will think you're a thug for wearing one. It's all about visual and verbal cues. I talk as if I'm slightly less educated than the norm, and probably sound like a smoker, and I expect people to get that vibe. Now if I were to cut my hair, start actually using my vocabulary and wearing some nice shirts, then people would think 'hey, this guy's got a future, he's probably going to college, gonna get a good job.' when in reality, I am going to college, and I AM going to get a good job, regardless of whether or not I wear some nice clothes.

To sum up my pretty long and pretty stupid rant, you should expect this. People judge, because judging is what people do. For an extreme example: If I see a guy with a gun approaching me with a mean look on his face, do I assume he might want to hurt me? Or do I keep my mind clear of judgement and ignore him just as I ignore the demure little lady next to me with the leather purse? Because it's obviously not right to assume that he might use that gun for something dastardly.

I don’t mind at all that when leaving a store I am asked to present the contents of my bag, while people twice my age, also carrying bags, freely walk past. It is fair to say, from my experiences at least, that people of my age represent a large portion of shoplifters. The act of them singling me out as a potential shoplifter is based solely on efficiency, as opposed to being a “YOU’RE A FUCKING THIEF” statement. It’s not my character that they are attacking here. Hence why I am not offended. There’s no reason I should be. ‘Discrimination’ is fine in certain contexts.

Look at the intentions behind a person’s acts before passing judgement.

You'll be treated differently depending on how you act by most people. If you're saying you like naruto, you'll quickly be put in the manga/anime fanboy category. If you act like you're someone else who happens to like naruto, you'll be treated like a completely different person.

It's pretty much all about presentation, and staying away from trying to sound or look like a stereotype, but try to sound like the person you are. Regardless of who you are offline (in this case), you'll be treated based on the image people have of you on here.

Fuck yes! If everyone came speaking in the way they talk when socialising (I don't even use this word in real life) for example I would talk in London slang which I don't think anyone would understand then no-one would understand me, you can't see the me outside the internet through what I say on the internet.

Why the fuck is everyone here suddenly nigerian?

Is there a problem? Do you want me to get a Nigerian to hack your computer find your address and quickly get you silenced whilst stealing all electricals and money in your house? (sorry personal joke... or is it the stereotype of a Nigerian in kjffdgh sorry I had to fight myself not to say it... I'm sure all Nigerians know the Nigerian stereotype *reminisces*).

I'll write more when I can be bothered, I've had this argument 10 too many times and never once on the net...
