Developing my Musical Talents

Hello everyone. Some of you may know that I've posted music to this forum before, but that was a while ago.... I am fairly new to the art of music, I'm actually the "drawing" type of artist by nature. But I love music so much I wanted to start making my own.

This topic I'll be putting up some music for you guys to give your criticism on. I also want this thread to be an inspiration to others who love music, and want to create music, but may not be that great at it right now. I know from experience the hardest part about making music is trying to make it sound good enough for even yourself to enjoy. I struggled making my music sound good at first and it has deterred me from further developing my talents.

Over the years I have gotten much better, and I want new self-taught composers to know that I also started off not sounding so great, but with practice, your music will sound much better.

Let me first start off by saying, I started making music way back in 2007. Here is the first song I ever created. Its an rpg battle theme song.

It sounds ok. I did not use the program I used to make this song for long, when I found FL Studio I quickly started using that instead. I also had a pretty good idea of how I wanted my music to sound. Here is one of the first songs I ever created with FL Studio:

This song I would say is not my greatest and is certainly the "baby stage" of developing my musical talent. The problems I have struggled with was mainly knowing what pitch what note should be, creating good melodies, and getting the tempo correct.

Over the years I have practiced and my talent grew. And in 2010, I was able to create this song which Aion Online's main theme had inspired me:

Better sounding instruments made this song possible. However, I still do not have the scales of the notes correct which makes the song sound a bit funky at times.

I wanted to learn some music theory, so I found a website with free music theory lessons. The main thing I needed to learn was how to know what pitch what note should have. So I looked at their scales lesson which suggested a very nice way to count scale notes by using a whole step half step formula. It said major scales should have this formula: whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step, half step.... And natural minor: whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, half step, whole step....

After learning this and practicing with it, I made this battle song:

My style of composing is putting down the beat first, then creating the melody, then polishing it with harmony and effects. I hope this thread has been of help to new composers, and I am looking for new ideas and criticism. If you wish to use any of my music, feel free to do so in free and commercial products. Please just give credit. Thank you.
