Developing a Game with this Method?

Instead of using Resources like Character Sets and Tilesets.
Is it possible to make a game using pictures and panoramas and stuff like that?
Or perhaps a mix of both? Like pictures instead of tilesets but still using charactersets?

Has been done/atempted already. It is just a hell of work honestly.
RMVX is easier on the creator at this aspect since you can see panoramas inside the editor. So you just use impassable tiles where the player shouldn't walk.
Same for XP but you'd have to guess where the tiles belong.
You would also have to get your hands on enough panoramas...

Hope this helps

Couldn't you slice your picture vertically into 256 pixel wide slices, and paste those into a tileset?
Then you could use the tileset to set your Passage, Priority, etc...
And you would be able to see your map in the editor to place your events, etc..

Just a thought

The one problem that leaps to mind, if you don't follow Brewmeister's advice:

Trees.

Basically, if it's all a panorama, you won't be able to have bits of the environment, such as tree branches, hanging over the character's sprite-- the character will be on top of everything.

I really want to see someone pull it off well. Several scripts have been made and tutorials have been made to support this, but that's only half the battle. You need have the commitment to make a gazillion panoramic images. If you're interested, Marcus wrote a tutorial for VX Panoramic maps, and I know SephirothSpawn has a script in his test bed that makes the character change size to give the feeling of going back in a perspective based map(think FFIX maps).
