Dechibifying the RTP template!

I mean, we all know the XP RTP is butt-ugly. The characters are nauseatingly chibi wads of dough with tubes for arms, etc., and they are simply impossible to take seriously. But I was playing a game with RTP-style charsets earlier, and as I spent a long time forced to look at them, it occurred to me that the basic structure is decent (or else one assumes it wouldn't have made it into the RTP). If you just narrowed it a little and made the head smaller and did a couple other things...

...it really wouldn't look that bad. (I know this particular butchering of Arshes has some issues, but I was mainly playing with it to see if the idea was good, and I probably will not be finishing him.) Opinions? I'd like some good hard criticism before I go further on this. But yeah, I'm thinking about making a template in this style and using it for my game; would anyone else be interested?

First part of the template:

It's a bit of a taller, slender format.  It would go well with mixing of body types with other actors and characters I believe; allowing for a more flowing and dynamic world when it comes to your art assets.

Used correctly, it could breathe some very refreshing air into many a project.

While this is true that the RTP isn't that great I think what you've got here is an excellent start. Although spriting on such a slender thing is going to make details take a serious toll.

But I think this is something that'd be interesting to see if you managed to pull it off. Are you going to resprite the RTP altogether?

I also gotta see how it stacks up in game y'know?

Because I don't like the fact that the RTP is as wide as trees and other objects.

But I'm being picky.

Good work so far! Keep it up :thumb: I think a darker palette would be better suited.

I was never really a fan of the brightly colored tiles that plague RMXP.

If only someone would do this for VX's sprites. If only....

I'm also thinking that the area around where the elbow would be should be rounded out more.

Or maybe where the wrist begins. You should either extend that section out by one pixel.
Or decrease the part below the shoulder by one. Not to sure which would look more accurate.

Yeah, this was just a rough first impression thing; if I were to finish this, I'd go back over it to define musculature and such. My other template is how this ultimately ended up, except by then I felt it was different enough to merit its own topic (and completely unrelated to the RTP by that point anyway). I'm probably not going to finish this at this point since I don't really think anyone but me would be interested in using it for real, and I think I'm gonna use the other one I'm making instead. :x

wow, that looks great!

when I saw that, I literally said "woah"

The only problem would be that details are way too small.

People will probably bitch about having to squint to see anything.

Oh yeah I can take that MUCH more serious. I hated how cutsey the rtp always looks. Very nice. But I wonder how it will look against the tilesets. Hmm. I'd say keep going most definitly. I don't see why people would bitch about details considering there's graphics with even less detail and smaller than these. So yeah I'm all for it.

or you could just put it into photoshop and make the layer thinner lol
but this is a much better quality way to do it

How is making the layer thinner going to solve anything?

What is making the layer thinner in the first place? I've never heard of such thing and I've been using photoshop for a long time. :/

But I agree with Raven. I like it. Continue with it because well it'll add variety to the default RTP. A lot of variety.

@Dark_Linis: And since my vision is already poor I squint most of the time anyways

making the layer thinner: dragging the right border of the layer towards the left so it appears tall and skinny...
Yes, but this doesn't fix proportions and is horrible for colour conservation.

While I appreciate all the comments, I feel I should point out again that it's likely I'm not finishing this unless people want me to. This eventually turned into my small template, so your energy might be better spent there. :)

@Despain: I am actually aware of that, just didn't know how to fix it. I tried to make the perspective a little better in my other template, but it's not perfect. Ah well. :x
