Critique would be lovely

Hello, I'm currently gonna start spriting again (and this time not give up again, due to real life matters)
Anyway, I started again after seeing WalkingAbomination and Green Raven. I tried using Green Ravens new Breeze template, and so far I got this. I really don't know about anyone else, but I think its a decent start after forgetting everything. I would like anyone to point out the mistakes and hopefully help also, and "Dood tat suks" is not helping.

Are you using the palette that green raven posted in his breeze thread?

Can you describe what he's wearing? I see the metal head band, and since the clothes are the same color, he's wearing armor? I'd guess he has a fur/feather collar because he looks a lot like your avatar except for the hair.  Red hair with blond bangs, right?

This seems to be a revival of an old sprite of yours. The one I helped with before with the blond frindge and the ">-<" on his hat. Pick up that sprite and start there, we covered good ground last time and you've seemed to go back to square one with this sprite. Thats a shame really...

Coyote Craft- no I made the pallete, he's wearing a fur jacket, the things on his hands are gauntlets, the shoes just have a longer tab, a headband, and yes his hair is reddish, with blond bangs

Alicix- good story behind that one...... I lost it, lol. Thats the only reason im remaking it. But I also forgot what I learned last time so im restarting it.... unless I can find my old thread

I think that you should change how the red hair looks a bit because it does not match the look of the blond.
I think that with the two different colors and the strands for the red hair being too thin looking gives it the look of a red fur hat.
I can better explain what i mean with a picture, here's a small example.

What i also did was decrease saturation (which was on full blast, not good) and added brightness to the color instead, then to make the hair stand out more i added some darker shades here and there, you need to do the same thing with the blond hair (too much sat again).

That red color on the suit and boots is too bright/saturated too, perhaps an orange type of color would work well, though don't use too bright a color because these will stand out too much against the gray and make your guy look bad.
I suggest maybe using maybe a very very desaturated green, blue or purple, might look better than a boring gray, at least better for the body suit.

The shoulder pads could use a bit more saturation because they look too bland, they will look better if they stood out a bit more.

The head plate looks boring, add some shine to it and loose the black outline at least for the top side, i think you should lighten that outline some more overall, maybe use a bland darkish blue.

When you decided where the light hits you'll know how to shade that head plate better, hope this helps you a bit man :)

Ok I took your advice and I did a little bit to it, I still kinda don't understand the concept of saturation..... and my biggest thing I want to learn is how you did the hair, it looks nice, so I slapped your example on until I could figure it out. Thanks for the advice, even though I'm still comprehending it. Anyway here is what I got so far, I did the bangs in a reattempt, I lowered the saturation on the clothes (I somehow got similar results without ripping the colors off the example) I think I desaturated the red on the clothes.... but I'm not sure

Alicix: I found the old example by the way, I looked back a couple of photobucket accounts

PS: its more of a band than a plate....... so I'm working on that still, I just drew it up fast to know how to place the hair

What program do you use to sprite with?
Because i think you should try GraphicsGale, it's perfect for this sort of thing.
By right clicking (color picker) the color you will see the saturation, darkness etc..
I'm sure most programs do this but i only use gale at the moment so i can only recommend that program.
And with gale it's there under your nose as the palette rests on the side so it's comfortable to use (much better than MSpaint anyway).

The hair is not too hard really, take a look at anime hair and how it's drawn and you get the idea,.. i know it's not as easy as that but i can't explain it any better.
Maybe try drawing it a bit and you'll start to get the hang of it.
Tanas hair tutorial is very good for this.

Character is looking better, just add a shine on the head band around the top area where the light would hit, maybe use that light color you have on the gloves, this will make it pop more.

For the bangs make that outer color darker and get rid of the slightly darker shade completely, when working with a small spaces like this you mostly need around 3 shades tops, so i suggest the yellow, a somewhat darker color to separate the hair strands and the darker outline to make it stand out against the face more.

I can put up an example pic if you like too.
When it comes to me pictures have always worked better than explanations, that's how i've learned most.
E-I'm sorry i forgot you mentioned it was more a headband, in this case you can add a slightly brighter lighting instead, if it's not a plate you need to go a different way about spriting it though, maybe not have the shape look so squareish because that's what gives it that appearance, i think you should remove some pixels from the corners to make it look more like cloth.

If i'm wrong about anything feel free to correct me guys, i'm still learning myself :)

While I like the body, the hair needs work. The new Breeze style uses more defined and detailed hair than the old one so you'd want something a bit more like this:

You need to make sure you draw the little spot that the hair is growing from, the different chunks/strands of hair, and add the little halo of light for depth(I actually think I overdid this one a bit in that example >.>). And make sure you use GR's palettes on the hair too :thumb:
(For a more detailed explanation check out Xinrua's thread, I just posted a little tutorial there).
^_^

Abomination: I kinda understand, so I'll work on that
Alicix: I will try and see how it works
Panda: I was gonna try that after I finished the hairs basic outline, but I didnt know how to approach it, so thanks for the example
EDIT: Panda I understand how the works, place your source, connect he strands, then halo shade them, right?

Geox, remember that you no longer need to post multiple versions as the new img zoom tag has been introduced just add zoom to the end of img tags so imgzoom instead of img.

But this is looking great so far.

A question, Is your avatar the same as this character? If so, are the >--< shapes on the bands meant to be different colors?
