One important aspect of game-making is the development of not only art, but music and story as well. Games can be made out of anything from poems to daily life situations. Things like these can make or break a game and are often overlooked.
What are the challenges this week?
Participate in challenges pertaining to fine-arts which coincide with one of the three themes!
I can't make music and art?
There are other ways to gain points like participation points (critiquing others' work). But give it your best anyway-- you can't improve unless you try, and some points are better than none!
This week's challenges are:
- Painting, Digital Art, Vector Art, or Detailed Drawing, involving theme. Non-animated. Score based on impressiveness, visual quality/mastery of skill, color use/lighting, adherence to theme, picture content. Points Possible: 25 per artwork
- Quickdoodle involving theme. Non-animated. Score based on impressiveness, visual quality/mastery of skill, color, adherence to theme, picture content, and technique.
Points Possible: 1 point per sketch
- Music which elicits tone or "feel" of one of the three themes. No loops or long repeating melodies. Song must be at least 90 seconds. Score based on impressiveness, audio quality/mastery of skill, composition & "emotion", adherence to theme. Possible points: 25 per piece
- Pixel Art, involving theme. No upscaling; color limit: 32 colors. Non-animated. Must be original. Score based on impressiveness, visual quality/mastery of skill, palette use/techniques, adherence to theme, visual content.
Possible points:- 100*100: 15 points
- 300*300: 20 points
- 500*500: 25 points
- Pixel-made sprite, involving theme. No upscaling; color limit: 16 colors. Non-animated. Must be original; no templates. Must have at least 4 significantly different frames (ex: a walking animation with 4 directions). Sprite can be in any pose. Score based on impressiveness, visual quality/mastery of skill, palette use/techniques, adherence to theme, visual content.
Possible points: 10 points
- Short Story or "Epic Poem" involving theme. Note: the quality of the writing will be rather harshly judged; it will be expected that you fully revise & edit it many times before submitting. It should be something worth reading. Can be funny or serious; adult content allowed, but don't be prolific with it. Obvious word-padding will get big negatives. Score based on impressiveness, mastery of skill/technique/style, content originality/creativity, adherence to theme, character quality, emotion, and lack of punctuation/spelling/grammatical errors.
Possible Points:- 1000 words: 15 Points
- 1500 words: 20 points
- 2000 words: 25 points
- Poem involving theme. Note: the quality of the writing will be rather harshly judged; it will be expected that you fully revise & edit it many times before submitting. Meter will also be judged; must sound nice. Must be of decent length; haiku or very quick/simplistic poetry not accepted. Can be funny or serious; adult content allowed, but don't be prolific with it. Score based on impressiveness, mastery of skill/technique/style, content originality/creativity, adherence to theme, character quality, emotion, and lack of punctuation/spelling/grammatical errors.
Points possible: 15 points
Again, every submission must relate to at least one of the three themes.
You are expected to submit quality work. We may or may not accept submissions depending on what you turn in. Forum rules apply to contest. Best submission of this week earns 10 bonus points. Second place earns 5. Remember to critique.
What are bonus points?
Bonus points are points awarded for certain accomplishments. These include: best submission of the week (staff pick), and best submission overall.
What are participation points?
Participation points are an alternative solution to the participating in the contest. Instead of having a contest board with all the submissions posted together, you instead post in the corresponding board: art goes in art board, music goes in music board, etc. When posted, members are allowed to critique your work which allows them to earn participation points if their critique is well thought out.
What defines a good critique?
A good critique is a critique that is around a few good sentences that not only go in depth in explaining what, but also bring up new, solid points as well. This includes leetspeak and spelling. Make sure to sound educated when giving a critique.
Can I submit as many submissions as I want?
Yes. And you may also submit for the same challenge as well.
Please submit works in the corresponding boards: art with visual art board, pixel art in pixel art board, etc. Make sure to post links of the submissions here in this thread. Use Sub topic icon when submitting. Failure to abide may result in submission being void. Once submitted you may not change the submission. Do not make separate threads for WIPS and submissions.
My question was not answered what do I do?
Post in this thread and ask.
Are there any other alternatives?
You can PM Venetia or bacon and we will answer it as soon as possible.
When does it end?
Tuesday, December 28th. Days were added in consideration for Christmas Eve and Christmas.
