HBGames Holiday Contest 2010-2011

banner_intro.png

It's that time of year again. Behold, the Second Annual Holiday Contest brought to you by HBGames. Unlike last year, this year's contest will focus more on individual sections of game making instead of making a game in a short amount of time.

What does this mean for me?
Participate in whichever categories you like. You may win some cool prizes!

What are the prizes?
Fallout 3: New Vegas. However if you do not own the system, we can replace it with anything equal or less in value. We will also include a few indie games along with this prize. However, we are not giving away cash prizes.

I am not good at making games?
Instead of making a game, the contest will be focused more on the aspects of game making itself. With choices of pixel art, drawing, programing, animation, and even story boards, there will be something for everyone.

Deviating from previous competitions, this contest contains multiple parts. Instead of focusing on one game, it will be broken up into the following sections:

Every submission has to relate to one of the three themes chosen:

card_supernatural.png

{{{ Futuristic Winter }}} The year is sometime far into the future and winter has struck the world yet again. Is the future a utopia or dystopia? Did aliens really come back to kill us and steal all our power? Did nuclear warfare occur? Now take all of these ideas and apply it to winter.

{{{ Supernatural }}} Ghosts committing murder, demons running wild, or a mysterious monkey paw granting wishes. All these have one thing in common: they all are part of the supernatural. Now it is your turn to create your own super-natural tale of horror or maybe even wonder.

{{{ HBGames Homage }}} HBGames is filled with a rich history of fun times and even not so fun times. We have had some wacky, strange, and even precious members. Submissions in this category should have something to do with this site's history. Will bacon find dadevster? Will Hybrida come back with the Chinese? Will mawk ever find love? You decide.

Again, every submission must relate to at least one of the three themes above.

banner_scoring.png

Instead of having winners for each week, we will instead have a scoring system that is a bit more practical. Each submission you send in receives a certain amount of points depending on the challenge. Whoever has the most points at the end of the competition wins. However, there are other ways to earn points as well such as bonus points and participation points.

What are bonus points?
Bonus points are points awarded for certain accomplishments. These include: best submission of the week (staff pick), and best submission overall.

What are participation points?
Participation points are an alternative solution to the participating in the contest. Instead of having a contest board with all the submissions posted together, you instead post in the corresponding board: art goes in art board, music goes in music board, etc. When posted, members are allowed to critique your work which allows them to earn participation points if their critique is well thought out.

What defines a good critique?
A good critique is a critique that is around a few good sentences that not only go in depth in explaining what, but also bring up new, solid points as well. This includes leetspeak and spelling. Make sure to sound educated when giving a critique.

How will we know if we received participation points?
Every time a good critique is made, one of the staff members will edit your post, adding a (+ HOW MANY POINTS).

Can I submit as many submissions as I want?
Yes.

Can I submit a whole bunch of subpar submissions?
No, there is an expected quality of submissions and those who do not meet this required amount of quality will be void. We also have judges who will be assessing points to each submission.

What is a judge?
Each submission is graded by a judge. He or she assigns the amount of points you will obtain for each submission. The points will very depending on what you submit. There will be multiple judges for each assessment to get a better, more accurate tally.

Instead of having one giant board where all the submissions are posted, submissions will be posted in corresponding boards. Participants are allowed to have WIPs threads; however you may not make a new thread for your submission you edit your first post. Once a participants ready to submit, he/she adds the contest topic icon and posts into the weekly contest thread with a link linking to his/her submission. Once something is submitted, the participant may not change/edit it. He/she still may receive critiques. A summary of the submission process:

  • Participants must use the contest topic icon in their submission thread

  • Participants must post a link in the weekly challenge thread, not this thread.

  • Submission must be in the first post of the participants thread and the participant must make it clear which one is the submission

  • The submission must match one of the three chosen themes.

banner_questions.png

My question was not answered what do I do?
Post in this thread and ask.

Are there any other alternatives?
You can PM venetia, como, mawk, regi, or bacon and we will answer it as soon as possible.

er where does creativity or stuff like literature goes? like, not actual storyboard but background stuff, like languages or culture, that you just sorta want to make or include. doesn't seem like actual fine arts, but more like creativity.

a lot of creativity is in either finearts or animation. I dont know what you mean by languages but I can assure you there will be a writing task somewhere down the line

Awesome Bro

This hurts my eyes (White on black D:), but I think I'll try to attempt this, it's a good job I consider myself a pretty decent spriter and eventer, lol.

Scripting time, here I come! And critique isn't all that hard if you think about it, so hopefully I'll be getting some participation points for other categories I'm not quite so proficient at.

Yes! Just when I needed something to do the most. Question: In terms of web design, do you mean a full layout template that's coded or just the designs in photoshop or w/e.

no i am running a bit behind in typing the template
dont worry there will be plenty of time to finish
promise
most likely there will also be extra days to include christmas cause I know everyone is busy during christmas

we are taking it kind of slow
its intentional
we want to give people some time
instead of rushing this out the door prematurely we want more of a slow-paced idea

I promise things will pick up during the competition
promise
