Coraline

The other day I was browsing the Internet and saw an advertisement for this:

Based on a novella by Neil Gaiman that was published in 2002, Coraline tells the story of an 11 year old girl who moves into a new home with her parents and finds a secret door into an alternate reality, sort of like Alice in Wonderland. The new world is kind of like a more exciting and less dull version of her own life. Soon though, she discovers everything is not as it seems as she becomes a prisoner in this alternate reality to her "Other Mother" and has to find out a way to get back to her own world.

The film is being made in stop motion animation and is scheduled to be released on February 6. I'm really looking forward to this movie. I love the kind of style and surrealism it has, and the animation looks top notch. I don't usually look forward to movies, especially not animation, but for some reason I really want to see this. It's being directed by Henry Selick, and the voice of Coraline is being done by Dakota Fanning, whom I don't usually like but sounds really good in this movie.

Anyone else looking forward to this? I've seen the book before but never read it. Apparently it's really good and it's received many awards. The animation style really appeals to me though, and I just love the way the characters are done.

Here are some photos of the film:

For some reason I really like this picture. I don't know why, maybe it's just the character's expressions and the normalness of it all.

Coraline and another character, I think his name's Wybie. All the characters in this alternate reality have buttons for eyes.

Coraline heading to the alternate reality. This reminds me of a movie I liked as a kid, James and the Giant Peach.

The alternate Dad-boring in real life, but a singer in the alternate reality.

The "Other Mother" in the alternate reality, from my understanding she is the main antagonist. Reminds me of a spider.

This movie looks fantastic, and I cant wait to see it. Anything by Tim Burton is an automatic visit to the movie theater.

Also the stop motion animation is another plus, it looks so cool in a feature length film. Must have taken forever @_@

It looks a look like Burton film but alas, like I said before it's being directed by Henry Selick. And Johnny Depp's not in it. Burton or not, it still looks fantastic, and people who have been to an early screening say it's very good. Maybe you're thinking of Alice in Wonderland, coming in 2010?

oh, i thought the commercials for it said 'from the director or nightmare before christmas' :0
sorry i'm a lazy reader, i skim everything i read. i missed the part about the director

cool, different director. now i'm going to be less cynical about this film, but i will be expecting less burton-esque things.. and probably less eccentric colors (i loved the color palettes in corpse bride). maybe thats a good thing, and a bad thing.

btw ive liked dakota fanning in every movie she's done. i loooved 'i am sam', and the one she did with robert deniro the most.

Cruelty, youre not wrong at all. It did say that on the commercials, but thats because Selick directed it. Burton just wrote it, and produced it too, but I could be wrong.

Anyways, im looking more into this. Its based off of a novel that I might go pick up.

im so bad at movies ;-;

alsdlasjdi also that movie that dakota fanning did with brittany murphy was great. how did i forget about that one

I think this movie looks super cute and adorable. I loved the hell out of Nightmare Before Xmas. But I love anything that's stop-motion. James and the Giant Peach (I think that's the name?) comes to mind, too.

My husband can't stand these musical-movies though so I'll probably end up having to watch it myself when it comes out on Pay-Per-View :/

This movie is going to be incredible
I found this song from it just last night, and it looks like it's going to be fantastic

By the way, not really related to the movie, but the website has a really great design, and is packed full of little movies and extra tidbits, including a thing where you can put buttons onto people's faces.

Also, new trailer in HD. Hands down best one for the movie so far, definitely the creepiest. Can February 6 be any farther away??

I have been interested on this movie for a while, and now that I know it's in 3D, I'm more psyched to see it. Especially after seeing My Bloody Valentine.

Check out their [http://www.youtube.com/user/CoralineFilms]channel on youtube[/url] if your interested in the making of. They interview a lot of people with some of the interesting jobs (hair stylists and miniature knitters and the like) and it's really interesting

Coraline was released on Friday. I went to see it today, but I had to drive for an hour because my local theatre wasn't showing it. It was definitely worth the trip. I wanted to see it in 3D, but it was still a fantastic film.

The stop-motion is fantastic, and there are many times where you'll think it's actually CGI. Everything about it was really well done. It felt maybe a tad long-winded, but the great characters and visual effects kept things exciting. I highly recommend it to anyone here. It's being marketed as a kids movie, but I guarantee someone from all ages will love it. I've actually heards stories of people's kids crying and having to leave because it was too scary, and it was definitely a freaky movie. I'd try to get it in 3D if you can, but you probably won't even notice a difference.

I want to see it again now

Please tell me you're trolling. Tim Burton DID NOT direct Nightmare Before Christmas.

No, but he did produce it, and has been given most of the credit (his name is even in the title). Seriously, until I heard about how Henry Sellack (sp?) was directing Coraline, I had thought Tim Burton directed Nightmare Before Christmas.

There seems to be this thing now for some reason that whenever people hear "Tim Burton directed this" or even "Tim Burton was involved with this" they seem to all of a sudden want to see it, even if they have no idea what the movie is about. Burton is a lot more popular than Selick and more people know him, so they use his name more often to get more people to see the films.
