Ruby & Gosu
Official hbgames.org contest

What is Ruby Gosu?

Gosu is a game making library for the Ruby programming language.

What is the meaning of this contest?

I want to push Gosu on the RPG Maker community. I want us to open our horizons and try new shit out.
I want us to make something good. I think we can really become the leading site for Ruby Gosu projects,
and get some good games out there. They don't have to be RPG's remember.

What do we do?

Learn Ruby.

Then, begin playing around with Gosu. Follow the tutorial I linked to above. Start doing your own things.

Make a game with it. The game can be anything you can imagine. It does not have to be an RPG.
It doesn't even have to fit a gaming category that currently exists.

What do we win?

~ FIRST PLACE ~
  • An "I Love Wyatt" mug, which is only available from this contest*
  • The back of the mug will have the winner's name :)
  • $5.00 cash via Paypal

~ RUNNER UP ~
  • $5.00 cash via Paypal

What are the rules?

  • Projects may not use any game making software. Only a text editor and the Ruby interpreter are allowed.
  • Projects may not have any game-crashing bugs. (Not a disqualifier, but obviously not good marks-wise).
  • Projects should be mainly your own code.
  • You may compile your game into an .exe. In the event of which, you must supply your source code to the judge(s).
  • Projects may not have been started before the start of this contest.
  • The deadline will be decided on once we know how many are interested in the contest.

Discussion forum

*While the "I Love Wyatt" mug is only currently available via this contest, it may also be given out as a prize of future contests. It will, however, never be made available anywhere else but this site, will never be put up for sale, and there will never be more than 25 copies made.

All prizes in this contest are coming out of Wyatt's pocket. $22.99 worth. Therefore, I shall say this: I'm only giving out prizes if more than five people enter serious entries. Thanks.

The prize will be sent through Zazzle. We will require your home address. Please note we can only send to where Zazzle allows us to send to. Your address will not be stored anywhere, and will not be used for any other purposes than to send the contest prize.

You'll be judged on your creativity, imagination, originality, and overall concept, as well as how well the final product works. So, knowing Ruby only gives you a slight upper hand.

This subforum is here for any questions and to learn Gosu anyway, so that there is a level playing field.

If this contest works well we could support this officially. Or, the subforum can just stay.

Feel free to post your concepts or projects here as if they were project threads. Nobody's going to steal your ideas (if they do it'll be obvious anyway).

So...yes? No? I don't really mind, imo, I understand, I just thought the more the merrier? I can be off-contest, I guess.

Thanks :) although I should thank Dahrkael for linking me to Gosu in the first place :)

Just a note, if anyone's interested in the contest could you post here? Just so I know who's actually interested :)

This seems like a great oppitunity to learn both Ruby, and a new way to make games.

So, im thinking about entering. I could use the experience.

I'm afraid I gotta pull out.
Some uni stuff's going to take far more time than I originally anticipated.

I hope the best for this contest and I will keep an eye out every now and then.

Hey there,

I can't enter this one because I have a lot on my plate right now, but I wanted to make a suggestion. In the spirit of opening horizons, perhaps it shouldn't be limited to gosu? There's a few other comparable libraries such as rubygame, rudl and ruby/sdl

Or is there a particular reason why you chose gosu?

Well, I wanted to focus it on one thing so that we were all learning the same thing (for support, discussion, and sharing ideas).

But that discussion hasn't happened so...

:eek:uch:

I'll start some er... discussion tomorrow I swear!

You know, I think I'll give this a shot(I'm just learning Gosu myself  ).

Hopefully more people enter. But I'm gonna get that Wyatt mug, mark my words. :thumb:

EDIT: Also, is it all right to keep the project in .rb format?

Well, if I can't get my Gosu fixed up, I'll have to drop out...

It won't load any gosu stuff(other ruby scripts work).

Anyone know why that is? (I'm using Windows, if that helps)
