Hey kids! A hypothetical question.

There are two otherwise identical contests.

The grand prize to one contest is an xbox 360 (if you already have one or do not like xboxes, you can always sell it or something), and a lot of smaller prizes.

There are three grand prizes in the second contest: all PSPs. There are also a few smaller prizes.

Which contest would you go for?

That is what I think too, especially since the way talent is distributed in this community there are usually one or two people who REALLY OWN, and then a lot who are very good. I think the "lot who are very good" deserve a chance at a prize as well.

With a tempting prize, the "OWN" talent may come out; so I won't complain about having a shot! Hopefully this pans out somewhere. :)

Wow: that seems very generous. I'd be content with something as small as a book, or the like. Hell, I'd join in regardless of prizes, just to make up for my bad track record with contests! ;)

Well, methinks several smaller prizes would be best. It would probably encourage more people to participate (bigger chance of winning, especially for the little guy). And if this hypothetical contest pans out, I might be willing to cough up a little something for smaller prizes. Just might :)

I choose the 3 PSP's, because they could be given out to the top 3 people, + smaller prizes, + the whole thing has a greater cost than an xbox 360

People like prizes they can hold or use. Cash or gift certificates are valued less, even when the monetary value is more. Lesson learned from working at a radio station.

I say smaller prizes. The more prizes there are, the better chances people feel they have of winning and a few of the unknowns, like myself, might give it a shot. If there was only one prize I think a lot of people would give up before starting or halfway through figuring that Anaryu or one of the other major players will win anyway, so why try?

I'd also say offer a small variety of prizes. Being a community of gamers, I bet a lot of folks here already have an xBox 360 or a PSP. Something about the same value, like an iPod, as an alternative prize will attract people who otherwise might not enter because they already have one of the prize.

Usually, I'd go for the smaller prizes. Specially when the "smaller prize" is actually a "batch prize" (which I know wasn't included).

For example, as a kid I entered some kind of raffle at my school. Instead of wanting first prize which was a bike (I already had a bike), the 3rd prize was what I was after. A small collection of books from those "book sales" that we did (I don't remember the organization that does it across the states). You didn't chose the books, and it was for the entire city, so it was all pretty random. Plus you got a few things, like a set of buttons with the organization's logo, and a few more useless junk like that. But I always wanted to win that raffle...

So in this case, even though I'd like an x-box 360 as the first example states, and already own a PSP, I'd still - if my vote mattered for some reason - go with the 3 psps.

The problem here, I think, would be logistics, given region locking.

I imagine that after the winners were decided, the devices could be ordered online in the respective areas and shipped there instead of all purchased and then shipped out from Erk's house or wherever. :)
