Collaborating with multiple people on a project

Hey! My friend is a veteran... well.. he knows quite a bit about RPG Maker XP from a long time ago... but he did it alone.

He showed it to me, I'm getting the hang of it.. but the problem we're running into is that we'd both like to work on our game world at the same time. I realize there is no online component, and therefore no online-dual-editting component - but as of right now heres the process.

He does some editing, zips the project file, sends it to me, I unzip it, I do some editing, I zip it, send it back, etc...

It's very tedious (we take like, 1 day or several hour turns), and we'd simply just a way that we can both we working on it at the same time..

I'm more of a mapper, so all of the main game components could be stored on his computer and I would like to be able to create maps from my house and then simply send him the map files alone, that he could incorporate into our game.. how would we go about doing this? Simply copying the map file doesn't seem to work.

Any help is appreciated, and I'm looking forward to time spent on this forum! :)

Copying the map file should work, but you must make sure his RMXP is closed otherwise it get that you put a new map. Obviously, he should also have that map number in his game. You shouldn't have to send the whole game file to each other, just bits of it should work. XD

My boyfriend and I are doing the same thing you are. He does this and that, and I do something else. For example, he's "creating" our custom menu and when he's finished he sends them to me over MSN and I make sure the game is closed so I can replace any pictures or scripts. If I create a characterset for the game, I send it to him, and etc. etc.

It is a good idea for one person to have the main game. I actually have the main game - and have taken out everything I don't need.

I hope my example and stuff, helps you out just a little bit. I understand what you're doing, and it can get tedious sometimes - but soon it'll be simple. :D

I don't get it, isn't your friend a veteran?

All you have to do, if you're just mapping, is send him the project with your maps and he could just copy the maps from that project to the main game. But you also have to copy any custom tiles.
