wrong

world at war and black ops were made by treyarch, mw and mw2 by infinity ward. there hasn't been a numbered cod since 4. (you wouldn't call ffx-2 11 or 12 would you? how about tactics? or xiii-2? etc?)

really? REALLY? are we really going to have this discussion? 99% of the community accepts them as part of the series. no, they aren't numbered but when referring to those games, it generally considered acceptable. for example, the latest mortal kombat is considered MK9 even though it isn't numbered.

Awesome Bro

Actually, 99% of the community DON'T accept them as numbered lol, there's more people than you think who get irritated by it (Such as myself, and I reckon candle does too), candle also brought up a really great point, are you going to call Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy XV? And then Versus XIII will be Final Fantasy XVI, right? MW2 is a sequel to MW, so it's basically Call of Duty 4-2, not Call of Duty 6 or some other weird name... that's ALSO like saying Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is Assassin's Creed III, and Assassin's Creed: Revelations will be Assassin's Creed IV, which is impossible since it's a trilogy, lol...

Surely it's easier to say "MW2" than "COD6" anyway, so it's rather a moot point. If it actually made it shorter, like a nickname, I could understand. O.o

Awesome Bro

Yeah, it's easier to say "MW2" than "CoD6", just like it's easier (And more fun) to say "Blops" instead of "CoD7", lol... since that's what they are, they aren't numbered in the Call of Duty franchise

Hey hey guys I split this topic so we can go deep into this. It must be done.

When Factions and Nightfall came out people called them Guild Wars 2 and 3. Then Guild Wars 2 was released and everyone got confused. In the case of GW though, P/F/N are all based on the same engine and core game. Is this the same with MW/MW2? (I'm not saying that's justification, just wondering having never played either).

I dunno, I just call them:

Call of Duty,
Call of Duty 2,
Call of Duty 2: Big Red One,
Call of Duty 3,
Shit,
Shit,
Shit,
Shit,
and of course the new one that's coming out:
Shit you have to pay monthly for

I agree with the above post, except for the original modern warfare. Best game in the series by far, and the last good one at that. I honestly think Battlefield 3 will knock Call of Duty off its throne this year, once and for all putting an end to the annoying ass fanboys that make me ashamed to be a gamer.

Heh, no MW was the least shit of the shitty ones, but I would say CoD 2 or CoD 2 BRO is definitely the best of the series. The problem with MW is that it was the start of activision (with infinity ward's help) killing the series, because it was $40, which was on the high side for prices at the time, and it was super short. From then on the games got shorter and more expensive. WaW was even shorter than MW, but it was one of the first games to cost $50 new. Then MW2 was shorter still and it was, as far as I know, THE first non-mmo game to cost $60 in the modern era of games. Apparently activision decided they need to come up with an even more lucrative scam so now they're going to charge monthly!

Well, yes, I hope that Battlefield 3 will get people to stop playing CoD so it can die already. I mean, it died several years ago, but it's long past time to let it rest. Unlike CoD, which is getting farther and farther away from its roots, BF3 looks to be like a return to the original badassry that was BF1942!

there shouldn't have been any confusion just as there shouldn't have been people calling factions and nightfall GW2/3. they were expansions, not sequels. burning crusade is not WoW2, brood war is not Starcraft 2. in the case of CoD4:MW and CoD:MW2, MW2 is the sequel to MW1, so if you had to assign a number to it within the CoD franchise, it would be 4-2 not 6. (its actually more like the 8th or 9th game to be released with the CoD name though.)

Also to the point, Age of Mythology, despite being made by the same team using largely the same gameplay is NOT Age of Empires 3. It IS, however, considered part of the franchise just as FF Tactics is considered part of the Final Fantasy Franchise. It occupies that special segment known as side projects.

you only have to pay monthly if you want really in-depth stat tracking. (i.e. the kind of stuff only uber-hardcore fps guys give two shits about)

AFAIK the first PC game to cost $60 was AION (an MMO) and then MW2
aion cost 50. i know, i pre-ordered it just to get into the beta.

The guys at both Treyarch and IW would disagree with all of you. They've been using numerical conventions for their development, they only release the games with subtitles. Most likely, its a marketing decision. Besides, why are we arguing about something so trivial? Do you any of you honestly care? The only valid argument for the topic of Call of Duty is why anyone should continue to play these games.

Who gives two flying shits what treyarch and infinity ward think? Also that doesn't make sense anyway because there were 3 CoD games BEFORE CoD 3 was released. It's like Battlefield. There was no Battlefield 1 (it was called Battlefield 1942) there were 2 games released BEFORE Battlefield 2 (1942 and Vietnam) there's been a buttload released BEFORE BF3 (1942, Vietnam, 2, 2142, BC, BC2). Then Crysis was released, then Crysis Warhead, THEN Crysis 2 so clearly numbered games these days are silly.
