Ok, heres some feedback:

Clarinet Theme- Didnt like it that much, the clarinet melody didnt fit the piano counter balance. I like how it started though, very nice.

Piano and Flute- The begining had some bad chords, try and fix that. I have sort of the same problem with this one as I did the last; the wind part was too lacking. The Piano was very well done though.

Tension Rising- The use of 2nds chords in the bass line works well to make this sound eerie. This would work well for a delsolate, yet moody town. I like this. The part with the strings and piano was the best part. Try to exxagerate the climax, however. Build it up starting a tad softer and then gradually creshendo it.

Main Theme- Your use of chaeotics works well. The pianos counterbalance perfectly. I absolutely love the use of terris dynamics in this piece, brilliant. I really like this alot, great job. I listened to this like 3 times.

Boss Theme- The begining sounds like a somber forest theme, imo. Its good, and well written, not problems here, just try to make it a little more developed instead of use of repetition.

Dark Theme- The winds are wayyyyyyyyyyy underbalanced at the begining. The brass keeps it somewhat alive. Tune the steel drum stuff at the beginning down a tad.

Faster Theme- The piano is good at the beginning, and works with the soft wind pretty well. The winds sound great when they hit a nice sounding harmony, try to bring the bass wind out a tad more, it would sound really pretty.

Tentacles Theme- The piano backbeat is nice compared to the melody. They work well together. Try to bring out some nice articualtions on the piano melody, like some staccato notes or what not.

Aerendyll Theme- I love this piece, its really cool. When the synth comes in. The strings, however, I really was not fond of. Try to make the string theme maybe more bright, it would sound great.

Most of your music is well written, and I love your use of piano. Come post some of your work in the Music Forum, it would be great to see some new work over there. What software do you compose with/ plugins?

That's what I call usefull feedback!  :thumb:

I'm aware of the dynamics being a mess in a great number of the songs, especially the mp3's, they have yet to be refined. The program I used to convert .mid => .mp3 is Reason. I started using it a week ago, so I'm still figuring it out. It's rather difficult to get what I want to hear, but I think I just have to work a lot with the program and with time the dynamics will become better.

Piano and Flute - I'm curious what chords you mean. Do you mean the Eb I add to some of the chords? That's the only thing that I can think of you might mean.

Boss Theme - I'll add some nice little variations!

Thnx a lot for the feedback! It's really helpfull! :thumb: I'll post some new music soon!

Eb might be it, I didnt listen to it very carefully but its a bit sour. That might have been what you wanted in the piece, so im not sure.

I really hate critting peoples music and telling them whats wrong with it because I didnt write it so I wouldnt know its fallacies so I tend to crit based off of the sound and now the overall melody. In this case, most of your melodies are actually good.

Id like to hear more of the .mp3 tunes youve written, and less midi; I think you do a damn good job on the realistic sounding ones.

Also, as long as you are aware of the dynamic sounds its totally fine. Midi is such a vague thing sometimes, and its somewhat hard to control the velocity of the sound so most just leave it alone, and im glad you didnt. The change in dynamics was great, and id like to hear that in all your pieces.

But yeah, your music's good, and if you can please me with good music then I pretty much love you, haha.

The beginning has a few icky chords, and the balance is way overpowered. I cant really hear many dynamic contrast. The plucked string and string ensemble melody is kind of odd, but the main wind melody is somewhat nice. I think overall its a bit too much, try and tone it down just a bit.

I'm just going to listen to Oriental Theme. If you want me to listen to the other pieces I can do that as well.

I don't like the irregular 16ths in the beginning. It might be neat to do that once or twice but it feels overused by the second bar. The main melody is almost drowned out by the arp strings. I think some dynamic in the second solo (0:49) would be really nice. Overall the song sounds too busy for its pleasant and peaceful melody, that might be because the background is louder than the foreground, but maybe you want to try with half/whole note chording.

Well, suddenly theres alot of interesting music on resources. I'll refrain from making 'musical' comments since my actual musical knowledge is on the same level as a deaf badger.

What I did like most was the fact that though the pieces were short, for the most part they lended themselves very well to looping, which is of course an attribute ideal for game usage, but not something many pieces can boast. On the other hand, some pieces felt kinda 'leap to the throat', and though this is just my opinion, I feel that most music (for games, at least) shouldn't do that. By this I mean that they seem loud and busy and snatch your attention away from other things, rather than offering a neat accompaniment. This strategy is fine for adrenaline pumping battle musics, but not really map musics. But, as I say, that's just my opinion.

My favourite is probably Tension Rising; Its simple and not too busy, and lends itself to a sneaky theme well.

After that would be Aerendyl Rising. Thats some really trendy music for a desert or highlands. Though it gets a bit loud around 0:31 in my opinion. Nothing one couldn't axe down and normalise in Sound Forge, but I regret having my headphones on so loud now...ow...lol...

Boss Music feels not like a battle piece, but rather the piece that plays whilst we have a cutscene showing the anatagonists evil deeds.

Dark Theme is nice, and again has a desert sands feel to it. Again, however, I feel the gain could go down just a little.

Because of my strange, anime infected mind, I immediately thought Tentacles Theme must be an upbeat theme about tentacle rape. 0_o' When instead its more aquatic, like a 'seaweed in the floatsam' kind of feel. Might want to rename that one...

Yeah !
I find your music awesome !

I want to use it in my game, Nebelung, which isn't presented here.
I respect your work, and it's so I will give you credit.
If you want some precision about my game, I can send you two addresses where it's presented. (it's like pub)

My favourite are 'Tension rising' and 'Faster Theme', and I like too 'Oriental Theme 002' (but where the 001 ???)

Thnx for the nice comments!

I would be really interested in hearing what you have to say about the other songs as well Tai! I had some doubts on the 16ths in the beginning as well, but after listening to it a couple of times I feel it works okay. I'm not very good with dynamics, still have to work on that. Melodies sometimes don't come out the way I want them to in that aspect. You'll hear that in some other songs as well. I'll keep experimenting and hopefully I'll be able to get those dynamics right someday!

I'm trying to work a bit more minimalistic eharper256, but before I know it I've like 3 instruments written out. So that's something I'll have to work on some more :P I understand that indeed the music should not take away the players attention to the game, but instead should fullfill a supporting role. I'll try to remember this for future compositions! :thumb: btw: Tentacles is the name of a forum user for whom I wrote the theme! So therefore it is called Tentacles' Theme! :P

Glad you like them darkleo! Feel free to use them in your game! I'm looking forward to your game!

I'll be traveling to East-Germany for about a month starting next saturday (jun 28th). Going to Full-Moon festival. So I won't be around for some time. When I return, I'll start making some new music again!

Hmm, yeah, thats what I'm talking about. Your new theme lends itself much more to an accompaniment: I especially get the feeling of an idyllic starting town with that. Which is fine: a theme nearly always gives hints on where it is best used by its mere character.

Don't get me wrong, though, interesting music can really make a game, and loud snappy musics serve excellently in cutscenes and other important areas. But for general wandering about, the music is best as an accompaniment, not as a main course. Thats the point I was trying to make.

I downloaded the whole set and am writing this as i listen to each piece.

Boss Theme
I don't mind the repetition, there's enough to listen to without one single line or note getting annoyingly stuck in my head. Sounds like a good pre-battle theme. (a The "You Impertinent Fools" Theme.)

Clarinet Theme
those two notes at 0:24 repeated four times are sticking badly. I would change it or add some drastic dynamic there. My MIDI clarinet voice sucks, too, and considering that the clarinet is the only foreground voice it's important that it sounds good.

Main Theme
oo, i really liked the really high up clav/marimba/whatever at 0:50-ish. After hearing it once I wish it would continue to be used throughout the song. Really neat blending with the pianos. Gets a little sloppy at 0:37, but I wouldn't let that small part force you to deconstruct the whole song. I feel like like I'm hearing a stepped fadeout instead of a gradual one. =/ Not a problem if you intend on rendering the songs to MP3, of course.

Oriental Theme
I'm listening to this again. Those 16th notes are bothering me a little less after hearing your previous pieces. I think the harp should take it down another octave during the flowing shaku solo at 0:48. I don't know how bends (for the shaku) would work into this piece but it might be worth a try.

Piano and Flute
weird note between 0:12 and 0:13. Oh god the flute sounds horrible on my soundcard >__<. The solo piano at 0:50 is drowned out by the supporting notes. IMO there isn't enough flute for a repeat to sound natural.

Tension Rising
I can hear a huge stereo difference through my speakers, I think if I had my headphones on I'd be going dizzy. I can feel the tension, but I wouldn't consider it 'rising'. That repeating G on guitar or whatever it is is causing another kind of tension in my ear.

Theme
Ah, I like this theme. I don't think the orchestral harp needs to be that busy for this soft a piece. Nice cresc. at 0:33. I think the preceding diminuendo is unnecessary, try with a sudden drop with the same buildup. Very good 'palette' of instruments. I hear a strange scratching sound, I think my card does that for certain notes of Bottle Blow or something if you used that. I can easily see myself using this piece with little modification.

Aerendyll Theme
The breathy thing sounds out of place seems out of place compared to the other more cantabile voices you used. I especially like the sequences at 0:16 - 0:24 and 0:28 to 0:50. I think a lot of notes clipped, check your rendering.

Dark Theme
Well, this is pretty much the same thing but with more 'morbid' sounding instruments. Try clarinet or oboe instead of flute. (at least I think it's flute... the high-pitched thing)

Faster Theme
The two flutes complement each other really well. I think a little xylophone or something along the lines about what I mentioned about Main theme would bring out this melody even more, but its a neat piece nonetheless.

Tentacles Theme
This sounds like a finished piece to me. Try with dynamics if you're going to play with it further?

Thnx so much for the detailed comments guys!  :thumb: It's really helpfull! I won't be around for a while because of my holiday, but I'm looking forward to your thoughts on new pieces when I return!

Ah, so your a bit new to the RPG Music Biz eh?
For a Beginner, you are actually pretty good.
I like your new theme "Dreams" because it has a "All hope is lost" feel to it
i love songs like that.

Anyways, since i liked it so much, i took the pleasure of
Re-Orchestrating it. Here it is in its Most Beautiful state:

All Credits go you Roelf Mik, since he had made the original.
Enjoy! :D

P.S.
Keep up the good work, you'll become popular in no time. Not saying you'll be a Hans Zimmer, but
you'll be pretty darn good.
