Cars

What kind of car/truck/SUV/etc do you have?
What kind of car/truck/SUV/etc would you want, if you had the cash or opportunity?
Like your car? Hate it? Recommend it to friends? Why?
Any cool car stories?
What were your old car(s) like? Your first?
Don't have a car? What would you likely get if you were in the market for one?
Let's see some pics too :D

This is my car:

2005 Ford Mustang
Though mine's the 6 Cyl model, not the GT. Though it has all the other GT upgrades outside of the engine. (Black leather seats, luxury sound system, dual headlights, etc etc).

I fell in love with all the chrome and the loud engine when I first drove it, and it was totally an impulse buy. Now I'm starting to regret it though. It was the 1st year of that body style, so there were unforeseen electrical problems. Even now it's dead outside because something's gone awry with the battery. I like its get-up-and-go, but hate several things about it. For one, it's too low to the ground. In a country full of trucks and SUVs, you get tired of seeing only bumpers and taillights in traffic. I neglected to get anti-lock brakes, so when I have to suddenly stop, the brakes lock occasionally. There used to be problems with the gauges (electrical probs again) but I just got that fixed. A few years back someone ran into me in the parking lot where I work, so there's a dent in the front-corner that I don't feel like ponying up to fix.

The next car I get ... Will probably be a light truck or jeep. So I'm higher up. I'm so sick of being so low to the ground. My warranty just ran out this month, so I'm planning on trading it in for something new this summer. But something cheaper. The mustang was way too big of an impulse, and I need to pay less per month.

I LOVED my old car, a 2002 Ford Taurus:

I don't know what it was about that car, but it just suited me perfectly. Maybe it was because it was the first car I bought (my FIRST car was a 1992 Ford Escort hand-me-down from my boyfriend after he got a better car). I loved the interior, it felt so spacious and comfortable. The gear shifter was behind the steering wheel, like a boat, and I LOVE that so much more than the center-panel variety. Everything in that car felt so ergonomic, like it was built for me. Sometimes I'd just drive around in it because I genuinely loved being inside it.
In 2006, I lost it in an accident where it was 100% totaled.

I would have bought another one but they discontinued them that year. I know they're making them again but they're actually a revamped version of the Ford 500 (or, the other one that came out that year--I can't remember the name), and it really doesn't look or feel the same. The interior on the newer models is much smaller, and it basically feels like a slightly larger Focus or Diamante.

Anyone have any recommendations on some light trucks or jeeps or SUVs? I don't want my next buy to be an impulse one.

I don't have a car because driving here is gaffucking expensive.

My parents stopped having cars a couple of years ago, and now hire one for holidays and special occassions. But they had:

M-reg Ford Mondeo Mk I

This car is still running after what, 14 years, if not more, and has never broken down. We saw it drive past the other week.

S-reg Renault Laguna 1b

Not a bad car... it just broke a lot. Bought from new, drove it to 90k, and probably cost several thousand along the way in repairs.

S-reg Ford Mondeo Mk II

Amazing car. Bought with 88k on the clock, drove it until 160k, no problems. Only got rid of it because parents stopped doing cars altogether.

P-reg Ford Fiesta Mk IV

Decent car. Didn't have it very long. No suspension or so it seemed, bad for speed bumps :p.

I'd recommend a Ford Mondeo. Fantastic car, never had any trouble with it.

I'm not sure, but is a Taurus a Mondeo? They look very similar.

Cool stories? Well, the guy who owned the Laguna bought after ours, with near enough identical license plate, magically booked their holiday spot next to ours. Parked next to it all week after driving down following it. Even followed it back home, until we pulled off to a services for some foodins. Then pulled back out, and on the hard shoulder was a steaming wreck, completely totalled, nobody could have survived it, and just the license plate lying on the road...

im still getting my license
though it will be a while before i have my first car
regulations and standards here are much higher than in the usa, so the cars are too
also if i had the money i'd probably buy an aston martin
because i'm an old man and like luxury

although i can borrow my parent's cars anytime, moms got a

renault grand scenic
(yes in this blue color)

both pretty good cars
although they look like shit

Wow I can't say I've heard of any of those cars from you Wyatt or Tomas. And I'm pretty familiar with pretty much every car model currently available in the US. I've never heard of a Renault either. I didn't know the models were entirely different overseas even between the same make!

edit: Oh, no, I have heard of a Swift. And I've seen Fiestas before and they didn't look anything like that. Weird.

You know I've been looking at getting a jeep more and more. I've always liked the look of them. I saw a few used ones online going for about $10-$13k. how well do they hold up when they have ~50k miles on them?

I drive a silver Pontiac grand am.

I'm not sure I'd recommend it though. Mine's falling apart. My cousin used to drive the same kind. She took it through a automated car wash once and it ripped off the side mirrors. So I only hand wash mine just to be safe. We both had problems with the driver side window which aparently is a common problem with this car.

My rear view mirror falls off during the summer cause of the heat. My blinker makes randomly clicking noises when not in use, even though I replaced a few parts. The diver window doesn't always work. My seat is lop sided cause it's missing a spring. The passenger head light is glued in and dented above the wheel from when a car infront of me slammed on the brakes and I didn't react fast enough/ swerve far enough. (The car I hit didn't even get a scratch and I got a ticket for driving to close. )
It drives pretty good on snow and ice. I drive about an 1hr a day to and from work, and I've had it for about 4 years.

yeah but a nissan bought in america is different from a nissan bought in japan. i didn't know that but since i saw the brits' posts i started looking into it
it's interesting how they change this shit up depending on the market
why do cars sold in britain have such weird headlights, with the fronts sloping inward? and they all look like they were designed in the late 80's. i wonder why that style is more popular there.

It's all about safety - and what happens when you knock someone down - at the moment.

Most new cars here now are 5* rated in safety for the passenger, but also safe in the notion that if you run down a ped at 30mph they probably won't break a bone.

most cars here are 5* safety rated too. weird looking headlights and late-80's exterior designs won't make the car any softer when plowing into a pedestrian.

If they've been well maintained, they're very durable. I have a buddy with a TJ (199? Wrangler) with over 200,000 miles.
Mileage isn't great (18/22 mpg). Mine's a manual, so I can squeeze 23/24 mpg if I baby it. (which I usually do.)
This is my 3rd Wrangler. I'll have to see if I have a pic of it covered in mud & blood.

You'd look good in a Jeep! :scruff: ("...full blast & top down")
