Can't choose Translucent or transparent colors. [RESOLVED]

I just tried to import a charset into RMXP, but it wouldn't let me choose a transparent background. The background for the character is Pink, so I'd need to set a transparency, but I can't! I've tried saving as a JPEG (ew.), a PNG, and a Bitmap, none of which worked.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Resolved. Tested again and bitmap worked. Must have screwed up something earlier. Sorry for the waste of cyber space =P.

What I've found works best is using a paint program to create the transparency and then saving it to the game folder.  For some reason, the program sometimes doesn't recognize when a file needs transparency.

Basic MS Paint doesn't have the feature, but more advanced programs usually do.  I always recommend Paint.net because it's free and has many of the more advanced features, including layers and transparency.

Paint.net is probably the best program to use if one can't afford Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Fireworks.

I used Paint.net tor my shitty banner, but it only looks that way cause I fail at graphics XD.

Anyway, where's the transparency option? Since I never get people willing to do my resource requests (can't blame them), I'm gonna need to need alot of this x_x. Also, is there a crop feature, by any chance? Couldn't find it last night.

Erasing pixels in paint.net will produce transparent pixels instead of, say, white ones.

The way that I generally crop something is by using, say, the Select Box tool to select the section I want to keep, copying it to the clipboard, and starting a new document-- if you have something on the clipboard, paint.net will automatically set the size of a new document to be the size of what you have copied.  Paste, and you're good to go.
