Boots

I'm not entirely sure where this thread would go as it's asking for both criticism and a bit of help. Please feel free to move if it doesn't belong in this forum.

I've been having fun with gRTP lately. The minimalistic shading makes for a great quick way to sprite and recolor sprites. However, I'm having a world of trouble spriting certain things - mainly because I'm very much used to using several colors to shade when it comes to effects in clothing.

Here's my attempt at spriting a skin-tight leather boot:

I've also included a reference for the effect that I'm trying to achieve (though the silver embellishments should be ignored for now).

My problem is this ... Since it's skin tight, it would make sense for it to have the same type of shading as the bare leg. Hence, I've tried to simply replace the colors of the sprite template. But I get the feeling that it looks terribly pillow-shaded and not very flattering. Now, having played with different shades of black/gray, I find the combination of the three colors in the sample to be the best at showing contrast. Using a darker color for the highlight makes the boot look extremely flat.

So, what I'd like is for someone to possibly show me a different way of shading the boot or a different combination of colors that would prevent the pillow-shading effect from being glaringly obvious.

Thank you :)
