Best Games Ever?

We all love games. Action, RPG, Strategy, You name it. So many have left a little scar in our soul in memory of those games. The greatest. So I ask you, what do you believe to be the greatest games ever*?

Mine:
1. Super Mario Bros.
Hands-down best game of all time. Saved the world, it did.
2. Legend of Zelda (Series)
Best RPGs ever.
3. Goldeneye 007
Possibly the greatest action game ever.
4. Super Mario 64
Proving proper 3D. Greatest Adventure game EVER.('Cept for Dk64, but that's just my opinion.)

*: I don't mean your favourite games, just the ones that are the most influential/memorable/revolutionary.

ZELDA IS NOT AN RPG!

Sad how many fools believe that it is. It's an adventure game WITH RPG ELEMENTS!

On topic:

Sonic The Hedgehog- The little blue rodent is what got me into gaming to begin with. Sweet music and high-speed fun... I wonder why the sonic games of today can't be like this?

Kirby Super Star- I consider this the God of all Kirby games. A fun, semi-challenging gameplay with so many ways to kick ass. I can never get enough of this title.

Super Bomberman 5- One of the best bomberman games in the series in my opinion. Nice and challenging with a decent-sounding track.

Sonic CD- Back when Sonic had good games, this was one I grew up with. It's soundtrack was ok (Japanese/Euro tracks are much better, though)

Megaman 1-6, 8- I simply love this entire series (except for 7...), even more than any of the sub-series that it was broken into.

Wrong, it's an Action Adventure.

Zelda isn't an RPG because you can't increase the strength of your character by any regular and player-controllable means.

Weapons and Tools aside, as they are just that, weapons and tools and not the character themself, do not count towards this common element across RPGs.

If you take RPG and assume it literally, Role-Playing Game, there are too many games that fit the description. Monopoly included. The way to differentiate an RPG from other games is by the ability to develop your character(s) and Zelda does -not- have this, which is why it fails as an RPG. It is the same reason that games like Metroid Prime aren't RPGs, but are rather adventure games.

According to the definition given by Prexus, GTA: San Andreas and Warcraft 3 would be RPGs. Hmm. I wouldn't consider Zelda a RPG in any case. Even my RPG-despising friends would try Zelda.

On topic... My top games for different reasons would be FFX, Donkey Kong Country 2, Banjo Kazooie, Super Mario World, Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry 3 and God of War.

Perhaps most influencial would be be a better title to give to the games I have listed.

The best game, imo, is Blaster Master. Best damn music ever. If you have not played this game, then you simply fail.

I would say Tales of Destiny but then I'd be booed out of the forums :p But I'll do it anyways.

Tales of Destiny had all the improvements Phantasia needed, but still kept the same charm in the battle system, whilst adding storyline elements that were, at the time, original.

Then afterwards, I have to say Valkyrie Profile:Lenneth (I missed the PSX release, sue me). It had pretty much open-ended gameplay, and it had a lot of party members to choose from, so you'd never get bored of your party. The story was simply epic, and for once, the main hero was someone befitting of the role of "Main character".

Oh, and then Silent Hill 2. SH1 was ALRIGHT. Not bad, yet not good either. SH2 basically took the main faults of the game, made them good, and then used graphics that are honestly still good looking, considering it came out in 2001 for the PS2. The story was really fucked up (in a good way mind you), and it had some really disturbing monsters (SH3 however beats it in this regard.) Also, Pyramid Head is so kick ass, he's in a freakin Track & Field game. That's kickass on it's own right.

..Out of all of these people in here..This is madness..THIS IS SPARTA!!!!...-cough-..erm..I mean...WTF people! Resident evil 4!! Great graphics, sound, gameplay. It was also Voted the greatest game ever. Then there is Gears. The story was short..But the Online made up for it. I never really liked the Halo series but yeah, they are okay. But if i shoot someone in the head i want to see blood, skulls, brains and eyeballs..Gears gave that to me..WoW looks pretty good. Never played it. Bioshock looks Kickass with the little girls and the Big Daddies or whatever the hell you call them.

Not to mention keeping the ridiculous encounter rate, HOHO!

In my opinion the greatest games ever (that I've played) are:

  • RPG Maker XP
  • The Sims 2
  • Fable: The Lost Chapters
  • The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Final Fantasy X
  • Pokemon: Yellow Version

Isn't that a game for NES? If not, I don't know it.

Bestest:

FPS
Battlefield Series
America's Army
Classic Doom (not 3 shitness)
Half-Life 2 Serie (undeniable)
and my personal favorite MOHAA ^^

RPG (MMORPG included)
World of Warcraft
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
personal favorite ROSE Online (roxursox)
Chrono...something (for SNES, forgot name :P)

Strategy (RTS and TBS)
Warcraft 3
Rome: Total War
Civilization 2

Super Mario Bros. & Tetris

I did not list these games in any order.

hands down best game ever.....

Metroid

the original NES version, the DS version is good, but you cant beat a classic

Someone mentioned blaster Master earlier I have to agree thats on my list of all time favs also along with SMB1 and 3 (2 total blew IMO) Castlevaina is also another true classic along with Zelda, Contra, and hell even tetris should make the cut for best game ever.

I cant think of a single game from another console other than the original NES that should be on this list since I think a person would be hard pressed to find a good game put out that wasnt inspired by one of these classic titles in some way shape or form.

So the list for console games

Metroid
SMB1
SMB3
Master Balster
Zelda
Contra
Castlevaina
Tetris

granted this is just console games, you wanna talk PC games?

Eve Online - MMORPG - Future/space

Everquest - MMORPG - fantasy

Age of Empires - Strategy - fantasy

Diablo - kill stuff to make money to buy better gear to kill stuff to make mon...

Starcraft - Strategy? - Future/space

The Sims - I dont play this but for its demigraphic I hear tell its a good game

Scorched Earth - Still hours of fun for a game that fit on a 3.5 floppy when it came out

The monkey island series is amazing.

I love broken sword games.

But the hardest game i have ever played would have to be...

JET SET WILLY!!!
For the Spectrum.

The original Metroid is not without its charm but it has its flaws. I still think Super Metroid is the best in the series. I have yet to play Prime 3: Corruption yet, though. I could be completely wrong from what I hear.

Draconus, Prince of Persia, Montezuma (Atari and pc games), Silent Hill, Blood Omen: Legacy Of Kain, Legend of Zelda, etc.
I wouldn't say Super Metroid is such a great game (no offense intended) but to me it was clearly a bit rip off from Draconus which came one or two years before. Although Super Metroid still a GOOD game.

Also I would add Vagrant Story. Don't ask me why lol but that game got some interesting points, (apart the annoying boss battles).
Another good game was Lufia II
Now concerning recent games: Thief II: The Metal Age, The elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and hmm, did I mention King's Field IV?
Also Wipeout XL, and anyway, I could go like this for hours.
Oh, Planescape Torment was neat.

Galerians was fun, also Resident Evil 1 and 2.
What about ICO? And Shadow of the Colossus? God I had fun with those games.
Another interesting one was Otogi for the xbox. ( 1 and 2), quite fun to play.
I-Ninja was cool, trust me.
Final Fantasy 1, 2 and 3, also Valkyrie profile, (the new one for the ps2 was good, nothing extraordinary though, the first one was the best one, a real classic).
