Battlahs :: Foh Free!

Probably my first real post on this forum, but after using a ton of tutorials and stuff that users submitted, I felt like it was time to give back to the community.
So, I'm going to start trying to make a battler graphic once every 2 days, approximately. They'll probably all be medieval fantasy, since I'm not too acquainted with sci-fi.
I found out I'm not too good with a graphics tablet, since its a completely different feeling from a pencil and a sheet of paper. So, most of the battlers will probably be black and white, and you can color them as you see fit. However, I am trying to improve.
Since I'm usually at a lack of things to draw, I'll take any and all requests (that are appropriate for the forums =P), and they'll be posted in the order they were requested.
I did a berserker graphic real quick (and you'll see why I say I'm not good with a tablet), so heres a screen shot of it in game.

Heres the berserker on his own, if you're interested.

This is a WIP, not RPGMXP related, but its what I'm using to improve my digital painting skills.

So, feel free to use em, I dont really care if you give me credit or not (though it'd be nice =).
Also, please start requesting, I need some ideas! I guarantee whatever comes next will be better than the berserker. I'll get someone else to paint it next time (Ive always been more of a black and white shading kind of person as it is). If you need help putting anything onto RPGMXP (or which ever version you use), just ask. Though I'm sure some fine chap or chapess(?) below could help you out as well.

Sorry I havent posted anything yet, I'm working on some events and stuff, so thats taking up all my computer time.
I should have something done before the week is up though.

Thanks for all comments =)
Any suggestions for what to draw next would be appreciated. I have a ton of armor designs, but they arent posed or anything, so poses, charachter faces and hairstyles, etc, would be great.

ur color choices are watery and flat and the anatomy is bonkers. The skull looks quite nice as a work in progress why not put that much care into the rest of these?

The anatomy is fine. It is most definetely not "bonkers".

If I put as much detail into the battlers as I did in the skull, when I properly sized it, you wouldnt be able to see the majority of the details, or details would be mushed together with other details and that would look messy. I'm keeping it simple because thats the only way to keep the image clean.

I'm used to just using a pencil and doing black and whites, so I realize my color choices and stuff kinda suck. For some reason I just wasnt into color in drawings untill recently, so I have some "catching up" to do.

Some of my lines are a little funky as well. If there are any sorta squiggly lines, just assume it was unintentional and was due to my inexperience with a graphics tablet, lol.

hm.... how about a girl? :D

a fighter, like hand axe wielding girl, lol, idk, strange suggestion XD
Well, I already have a guy with an axe, but dont worry, I dug up some stuff that I plan to use.

the anatomy isn't fine. lets just use ur mage for an example.

Ok so i made a nice little head on and profile reference skeleton, and then piped over ut little immage with soem adjustments.

number 1.) ignoring the general lack of pizazz in the face the head lacks depth it feels like it's a half deflated balloon. When u draw a head u should ALWAYS have that full circle in somewhere. The meaty part of the skull never fore shortens

Number 2.) What you did with that right arm just isn't happening. Also, ignoring the fact that ur hands don't resemble hands at all, The way that right hand wraps around the staff implies that his wrist is either broken or inanely flexible. The top of the hand should face the viewer and the palms should face towards his body as it wraps around the staff. The position of the staff also has to change to account for where his hands would actually be were he to wrap his arm around his body like that. I didn't try to draw the hand in because doing that in Illustrator is difficult and i wasn't going to scan in an image.

Number 3.) His knee caps are too low and his calves are too short.

Number 4.) The entire figure lacks a feeling of perspective.

You can not want to take my critiques and keep on thinking you're wonderful if you want and i'm sure some people will be impressed by your work but Don't tell me it's fine. It's not.

Oh yes on another cute note, Even a blind gay man would look towards this guy and buckle over in pain. Teal and purple, especially in such pastel watery concentration do not mix at all.

Lets take a look at this;
number 1.) ignoring the general lack of pizazz in the face As I have mentioned before, to get the image to fit into screen, you can not go extravagant in detail. You just cant. And you obviously have never made a battler, or you would know. the head lacks depth it feels like it's a half deflated balloon. When u draw a head u should ALWAYS have that full circle in somewhere. The meaty part of the skull never fore shortens There IS a full circle....

Number 2.) What you did with that right arm just isn't happening. Also, ignoring the fact that ur hands don't resemble hands at all, The way that right hand wraps around the staff implies that his wrist is either broken or inanely flexible. Obviously, you haven't actually looked at what a person can do in real life. I can easily do that pose. And I'm far from being flexible. The top of the hand should face the viewer and the palms should face towards his body as it wraps around the staff. Wrong. Thats a quite possible pose. Maybe you've never seen it before, but its quite possible (it was even in a photo reference book). I'm betting you haven't even tried doing it.  The position of the staff also has to change to account for where his hands would actually be were he to wrap his arm around his body like that. Nope, read above, obviously. I didn't try to draw the hand in because doing that in Illustrator is difficult and i wasn't going to scan in an image. Don’t bother, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Sitting right here at my computer, I could put my hand in that position without thinking, repeatedly

Number 3.) His knee caps are too low and his calves are too short. What a pointless thing to state when they're very close in length. 1) You could argue you started and stopped the skeletons calves and thighs in the wrong places, either too low or too high. 2) I guessed when I was drawing it. I didnt take out a ruler and measure it down to 16ths of an inch. So, I'm really not worried that my ESTIMATIONS on length may or may not be (depending on the other arguments) exact. 3) You could also say, if I went and measured the drawing and found that the lengths were more exact than the image I posted, that when I resized the image, I made it wider than I made it long. I usually dont look to see if the ratio is still 1:1, I look at its dimensions and stop sizing once it gets to about the dimensions I need.

You need to realize that these battlers arent multi-hour long projects. I'm settling for "fine" on these because these are for people to use just for fun at home when they're making indy games that they most likely wont commercialize, and if they did and had big plans for their game, using graphics pulled from a forum would not be the best idea. These are for fun, and you're going much to much overboard with exactness. When I turn in art projects for school, I check and recheck with references to make sure what I'm doing is accurate. But not for fun, <1 hour battlers for people who are making games they may only share with a few other freinds.

Number 4.) The entire figure lacks a feeling of perspective. Thats because I wasnt trying to give it a perspective. I have seen very few battlers, either custom made or the ones that come with the RPGMXP/VX that have a perspective.

If you dont like the colors, thats your opinion, which I frankly dont care about. The person who requested it was satisfied with the color scheme, and even if it turns out they dont like it, I provided them the uncolored copy to color them self, or I could simply open up the image, go to layers, and recolonize everything. I'm fine with the color scheme, you not liking it doesnt make me a bad artist, it just means we like different color schemes.

I'm quite aware you're a forum troll and that you're just looking to piss people off or get into an argument.
Not to mention, there really is no reason why I should accept this kind of critique from you considering I have no idea what your credentials are in anything art related.
Not only were you wrong about your critiquing multiple times, you also went way overboard and picked it apart much further than was needed.

Anyone know if theres a "block user" function on this forum?

Hey cuties, two things.

Thing one: Mascarpone thank you very much for trying to contribute to the site with indepth critique, it's something we really are lacking, but it seems that this user would prefer not to recieve harsh criticism. I am not forbidding you from posting in this thread but your efforts would likely be better spent on someone else.

Thing two: Gebbethlord, thank you for contributing useable resources to the community. It is commedable that you're wanting to help people. However you really do need to toughen up and learn to take criticism, Mascarpone has raised some valid points and seems to know what he is talking about. He is ot attacking you or your art, he is trying to help you get better.

I could have sworn I had added a rule about taking criticism when I became mod but I cannot find it for the life of me. Oh well, I'll figure out how to word it and then add it.
