Basic Event help.

Hmm.. seems Ive stumbled across some problems while working on my first RPG. Through several tutorials and videos I can make a map, connect it, populate it, and generally the very basics. Almost everything I am using is custom, so all things custom I understand. (charsets, battlers, title,BGM, tilesests, hell even font.)

What I do not understand, are the freaking basics. Maybe I'm just missing things, but here is what I need help with.

Combat events/Party gain events.

For combat I understand you have it so its Battle Processing on the third tab, what I don't get is how to make it work without it do autorun. Basically what I want it to do is you see the enemy walking, and then if he touches you it engages in combat. (like in the official RPG off of the RPGmaker site.) Problem is, if I use the Battle processing event, the event wont work, I don't understand. I checked the approach dot and the autorun, but then it just attacks me as soon as I enter the map. Does it have anything to do with switches?

The next part of this is a charector joining your party, after it joins the char is still standing in front of me, I need it to go away.

Any help? Sorry for being nub, but I have checked numerous sites and it still doesn't make sense to me. A link to a tutorial would be great, or even better if you could show me what I'm doing thats wrong. (if you need screens let me know.)
 
Autorun means, "Execute as soon as the event page condition is met" (if no condition, it executes when you enter the map.)
You want the Trigger set to Event Touch.

For "the next part", in the event that adds the player to the party, set a switch, "0001:Skippy Joins". On the NPC (Skippy) event, create a 2nd page with the condition "Switch 0001:Skippy Joins is ON", with no graphic. When the NPC joins, the condition will be met & the event with no graphic will display.
