Autotile Expansion: A Mapping Secret

Sorry I couldnt embed it. Its too wacky of an embed code and I'm not in the mood to sort through it.
If it says there is an actionscript error, just hit OK and watch.

This is a little mapping secret I stumbled across, and using the search function I have found only two relevant posts that describe this secret. I came across this by accident, and it has helped make some better maps on my behalf. So, as I say to you in the words of my uncle... "ALLEZ CUISINE!" (Iron Chef Refrence)

skip to 1.58 for the real information, if you're impatient.

You don't really need a video for that.

It's not really a secret, it's in the help file.

"The tiles displayed in the very top row of the tile palette are a special variety called autotiles. Autotiles contain multiple patterns per tile type, automatically adjusting their borders as they're placed on the map.

Press [Shift] while placing tiles or using the eyedropper to temporarily disable the autotile function.

Double-click an autotile in the tile palette to make the Autotile Expansion dialog box appear. Here you can select autotile border patterns directly."

meh, I was testing out my new screencapture program. And I couldnt find much about it using the search so I decided to make a tutorial on it.

I've know about this since the dawn of time.  :x

How have you been mapping all this time without it? O_O"!

I feel like an idiot now. Thanks for telling me that -_-.

I was using a program called Jing. Its totally free buts pastes its logo on the videos you make. I'm still having problems recording sound with it, and I cant capture a rmxp game without getting a bad framerate from it.

Seriously though! If everybody knows about it, how come theres only two relevant posts on it in the entire site? Maybe I ought to share one of my event scripting tutorials...

Well, i had no idea that you could double-click on the autotile to open up a new menu o.O
and i doubt that i am the only one, but now i know, thanks ^^

Thanks, I didn't know about it either. Having said that, I'm having trouble seeing what it could be used for AT FIRST GLANCE. I'm sure it has some neat uses that are part of advanced mapping but I'm not quite there yet.

One use of it is to have tiny separation lines that would otherwise be connected. E.g. if you place two lines of grass autotiles right next to each other, they'd connect together into one wide 2-squared line instead of 2 separate lines. If you want to get around that, you can either use different layers or use the autotile expansion. Sometimes the layers method cannot be done easily due to the use of tiles on the different layers already, and that's where the latter comes in.

Wow used RPG Maker for years and never knew that..course thats because my maps were done in PS and I didn't really use Autotiles.

If you hold shift while right clicking on part of an autotile that is already placed, it only copies that one part of the autotile to your brush so you can place that tile, just like an Autotile Expansion without going through the Autotile Expansion menu.

Also another big secret:

Hold the right mouse button down and drag it over a section of your map.  It auto-copies it for use later!  Just left click to place! :O

Hax, I'm telling you.

This thread makes me laugh. No offense, but everyone should've been able to figure it out themseleves. But there seems to be many people that use RMXP even though they souldn't.
