I was just thinking about Death Note when kip mentioned Near in a topic of mine.
For some reason the climax of Death Note entered my mind and I stared to think about the possible reasons why L mentioned to Near and Mellow that together they could surpass Kira, but individually they could not. So I started to wonder if their odd pseudonyms had anything to do with it.
I'm also a fan of other detective shows, so I thought I'd make a silly, yet improbable deduction on the names. Implausible because of how simple the concept is, but I was rather surprised at the results.
I started by writing down every letter of the alphabet and under it, its index (A = 1, Z = 26).
Then I wrote out the characters names giving enough space between each character so that when I wrote a number underneath I wouldn't have to squeeze anything in. I used Ryuzaki for 'L' as well as his name as shown by wikipedia.
Then from left to right, I added all the numbers for the names, and got the following results:
Yagami Light = (25 + 1 + 7 + 1 + 13 + 9) + (12 + 9 + 7 + 8 + 20)
56 + 56 = 112
Near = 14 + 5 + 1 + 18 = 38
Mellow = 13 + 5 + 12 + 12 + 15 + 23 = 80
Near + Mellow = (14 + 5 + 1 + 18) + (13 + 5 + 12 + 12 + 15 + 23) = 118
Ryuzaki = 18 + 25 + 21 + 26 + 1 + 11 + 9 = 111
L Lawliet = 12 + 12 + 1 + 23 + 12 + 9 + 5 + 20 = 94

Amusingly I thought that Ryuzaki being a larger number made sense, because he became a bigger threat to Yagami after he met him in person. As just 'L', he wasn't able to do much more than suspect and passively speculate. Also, I added 'w' to Mello unintentionally, most sources state there's no 'w'; however if the above is pure coincidence, it's one heck of a coincidence.
