A new spriting template

Hello everyone, I've been working on a new spriting template for a few weeks, and here's what I got so far. It was born out of a desire for a more realistic spriting style, without having to re-make tilesets to fit my new style (I'm too lazy, XD ). So I developed the Legacy Spriting template, it is the exact same hight as the default RTP sprites, but I think it looks better. What do you guys think?

Kind of weird-looking to me.

The belly looks too far down on the front, and the legs don't look like they are just some pieces connected to that lower belly. Frome the side, the movement of the left/right leg (the fourth frame on the right) looks odd to me as well.

@RPG Wisard: thanks, I'm actually working on making a sprite on this template! I thought I'd be bombarded by insults directed towards the template, you happily surprised me! This is what I have so far http://celenath.com/files/EnikyOrgPrev.png[/img] (yes there is issues with the shading on the breastplate, I haven't gotten to refining anything yet)

@Ratty524: THIS is what I was expecting, XD. I agree that the belly is weird, and the legs look attached, that was actually something I did to try and keep some of the RTP charm. I had it more realistic looking at first, but it defeated the only reason I wasn't using CG renders as sprites, it just dosen't have the RTP charm. I appreciate your comments, and I'll try and fix the movement. It looks pretty much like the RTP template walking, though, I tested it in game. I'll try and smooth it out a little more. Thanks for the comment!

@All: I'd like to see more comments like Ratty524's. I don't mind people tearing up my work, in fact I enjoy it! Tells me what to fix.

The space between the top of the shoulder and the armpitish area is way to fat, and when he is walking forwards there is a line of darker colour(completely straight across his upper arm) and then it goes to what I think is your lightest colour, try to even it out a bit.

Also, in the side animations his front side is completely flat, there should be SOME(exageration on "some") curves there, like maybe at the pelvis and upper chest. His heads a little to flat at the back in the sideviews too.

Why?  He doesn't look more realistic, his proportions are all wrong, theres no shoulder definition, the head becomes larger on the sideviews, he has a size zero waist (especially on the rearview) His head is strangely shaped and the colours are from the RTP template, or atleast close too it.  His front leg seems to be dislocated at the waist when he steps forward on the sideview aswell, should really look at that.  I'd say the only decent thing about it is the size, as you could use it with the RTP tilesets.  But since theres already a million other templates out there half of which are better then this one, why not focus your spriting on them, save you the hassle.  Cos it ain't getting any more realistic without a huge overhual of your work, and shed loads of practise.

BTW, I didn't read the other posts, but you'll get the idea eventually.  And seriously, work on the spriting, if your example is to go by, then you should really be focusing more on the basics before running into making a template.

@Dawne, I see exactly what you mean, I'm going to take these comments into consideration when I totally revamp this template. I like these kinds of posts, because they tell me more specifics so I can fix it, and make the template a nice one. I Think my idea of "Clasic RPG style charm" is going to die, and I'll focus more on realism, because I want people to like my sprites.

@|3_32 Thank you, this is a very well done critique. I am going to do a major overhaul after hearing the feedback here. On other sites, they have just said "looks good!", "looks weird", "looks a bit...long.", and other such vague comments. Yes I know it uses the same colors from the RTP template, this was on purpose, because I don't want to learn a new way to shade, I've only been spriting for a few months, but I've already gotten the hang of it. Believe me, I've done alot of spriting, I've done some sideview battlers, a lot of charsets, and some pose templates for RTP, so I know my way around with pixels, I just wanted a new style for my upcoming game. I haven't been around ORG much, so that's why you probobly haven't seen my work.

@everyone, This has fallen back into the category of WIP *sigh*, so I'll be posting an updated template soon! I'd actually fixed alot of the problems with movement, but I lost them when I wasn't focused in the screen I thought I was, and closed the wrong file without saving (that sucked). I thank you all for these suggestions, and will take them into account as I revamp the template!

Mistaken or not, it kinda proves my point that there are sooo many other RTP based templates out there, that are better done and more realistic that spending more time on this and not on practicing your sprite work is stupid.

That statement and this image kinda fit together perfectly when I say, "You need to practice more".  Don't take it offensively, but the other forums you've been going too obviously aren't C&Cing you right, if you want, PM me or post a new thread with your work and you can get some proper C&C.  There will be tears!

I don't think you should be teaching people how to sprite on your forums. Improve yourself first.

Use that to help your anatomy.

@|3_32, That sprite isn't my best work, I was just playing with the template. I haven't done any polishing yet. I know it sounds stupid when I say this but, I can't really show you any of my good work since it all got lost when my comp crashed. Yes that sounds like a n00bish response, but the reason that that happened is because I used a portable hardrive that cahces, and destroys alot of your data when the comp crashes. I know I need more practice though, I'm not yet a great pixel artist, but I am getting good. From now on though, I'll post my work here for some CC, I really need honest and professional feedback on my work if I'm ever to get good at this.

@Blood_Puppet, like I said above, that sprite, and the template, aren't my best work, I'm just trying to move to the next level. I don't know how to advance slowly. I stay in one skill level for awhile, then leap much further. This is my attempting to leap to the next step. I may not have succeeded in the creation of the template on my first try, but that dosen't reflect on my ability to teach (so far I've only written frankenspriting, recoloring, and icon making, I'm teaching shading, and other advanced concepts until I understand them enough to explain them fully) BTW, thaks for that sketch, I'll use it in revamping the template.

@all, the CC I've been getting has changed my opinion about org, I love it now! Thanks for giving me so much helpful advice!

Well it looks like it's using the RTP palette, skintone, and ... Feet? Even if it's not precisely, it looks like it. That's probably why it looks familiar, van helblaze.

Not saying this is bad, legacyblade. It's practice. People're allowed to practice! There are a few funky things about it people have already (superfluously) mentioned, but practice is practice, and with it you can only get better :).

It's still better-looking than a good deal of templates I've seen, so don't give up. Templates are a b!tch!

I agree. Yes, I admit, those are alot like the RTP feet, but there is a few differences if you zoom in. I'll keep working on it as soon as I finish playing with my new midi keyboard.

I think your problem is the head and chest for the sideview, add a line of pixels down the chest to show it up a bit more.  The head is too circular. If you look at a normal head, it'll curve in at the back down to the neckline.  If that makes any sense.  Also, the nose thingy.  Maybe try again, looking at other templates to understand what I'm saying.

I'll post more when I'm sober. :>

Ok, thanks for the response. The nose thing, that is based on the RTP template. Just I thought it looked like a female chest with the extra pixels. I'll see if I can achieve a curving neckline, I tried for awhile, but eventually all my fixes got it back to that point. Thanks for replying, and I'll look forward to when you're sober, so I can get more of a response, ;)

- edit

I forgot to post this sooner. This is the template with all but the inbetweens. So if you have any critiques on any of the views, please post them.
