A Light in the Dark (Winter Contest Project)

This is my Walkin' in a Winter WonderMAP001 contest project. I've been working since November to get this done before the deadline. Unfortunately, I've had a lot of school and job work recently, so this project feels rushed to me. There are so many places where I want to go back and make it better. I'm barely halfway through the game and the deadline's coming up in less than two weeks. D: BUT things are going smoothly right now so hopefully I'll get this thing done! (also, I appear to be the only person in this contest who made a project topic! I was gonna make it earlier but I was also planning to be nearly done the game by now, so!)

When Ethan and Claire were only a few months old, a fire in their home killed their parents and left them as orphans. Now, fifteen years later, the twins live at the Mountain City Orphanage. It’s not exactly the prettiest place; the teachers are strict, the other kids are jerks, and the headmaster is downright evil. After living here nearly their entire lives, Ethan and Claire decide they’ve had enough. So, one night in the dead of winter, they find a way to escape the grimy orphanage. They leave in search of a better life. Hoping to find a job somewhere in the city, they manage to escape through the sewers. Of course, they don’t exactly end up where they’d hoped, and soon they find themselves outside the city in the enormous forests surrounding it.

Now they have even more trouble. Cougars, frostbite, and avalanches-to name a few. They have to find a way to survive long enough in the forest before it’s too late. How will they get out? What will they have to do to survive? And what is that mysterious light that seems to be guiding their path? Join the twins as they struggle to survive in the icy forests and attempt to find a better life, one outside the orphanage.

Mountain City
Mountain city is your typical western city. It has skyscrapers, hospitals, baseball stadiums, theatres, and everything else a city has. The Mountain City in this game is based on Denver, Colorado. It is surrounded by mountains from all sides, and can get pretty chilly in the winter. It also has a very rundown and grimy orphanage, as well as a very complex sewer system.

Mountain City Orphanage
Your typical Oliver Twist style orphanage. Contains all the necessities-an eating hall, a lounge, a library, a school, and even a basement. Funds have been lacking recently meaning the place is a bit, well...it sucks. The walls are filled with cockroaches, the water is disgusting, and the teachers are strict. At night the doors are locked and the halls are filled with patrol guards to make sure none of the orphans are out of bed. Hey, at least it has a courtyard.

Sewers
The sewers beneath Mountain City are a complex labyrinth of tunnels and passages filled with rats, bats and cockroaches. To navigate your way outta here, you’ll have to do puzzles and make sure not to get poisoned by the...er...â€

Wow, this looks awesome!  I'd love to see a demo, but I guess we'll probably have to wait until the contest is concluded.  I love your chills meter idea.  And an alternate ending is something to be desired in shorter games.  But if this is a good 60+ hours or so, I don't know if I'd worry about the alternate ending. I think I'd rather see what you had in store for us first, and if the gameplay is fun, then playing through the game again for the alternate ending would be worth it...  just my two cents.

It looks great though.  I wish you the best of luck!
