The Right Path - A different Pokemon game. Feedback needed!

The Right Path
Cheesy title subject to change

Platform- RMXP

Yes, it's a Pokemon game. It does NOT use the Pokemon Essentials base. You do NOT play a trainer catching Pokemon. There are no humans in this. It's a completely original story where you play as Pokemon. I am fairly new to this and I need your feedback. Please take a moment to play my game. I really need your help to know if I'm on the right track.

Story
Arceus, the god of all Pokemon, has ordered all legendary Pokemon to find and destroy Mewtwo. Arceus does not agree with the existence of the so-called "strongest Pokemon alive". As Articuno and his friends, you must obey the Lord's commands, but is it really the right thing to do?

Characters
Articuno - Your nice guy main character. He does not agree with Arceus.
Zapdos - Articuno's quick-tempered best friend.
Moltres - Sarcastic and somewhat lazy.
Entei, Suicune and Raikou - Trash-talking rivals of the birds
Wooper - Dim-witted little guy.

Known Errors
You need to get very close to people to talk to them. I think this is due to the size of the sprites.
Title screen and game over screen are still placeholder.
Please mention if you see anything strange or bugs or errors etc.
Is the game too hard?

Notes
Demo is over after you've gone through the swamp.
Be honest. Is my game boring? How can I make it better? Are the battles too hard? Is it a chore to play? How can I improve? Your help is appreciated!

I really like the idea for this game, even just going by the first paragraph! Especially interested in seeing a Pokemon game that doesn't use the same old starter kit that every other game uses. I'm downloading it now to have a look (but my Internet is quite dead at the moment).

Edit:

First impressions, I actually quite like it. It has the same sort of style to a game I made a long time ago, what with the always left/right facing character sprite and such. Battles are nice and easy to follow too.

My first impressions just from reading the post were a bit less positive than Wyatt's... taking Pokemon and put them in a non-Pokemon environment is rather strange, if you ask me... I mean, if you have a story that has nothing to do with Pokemon (or is at least further away from the base Pokemon concept), why not make up some own characters for it and take the originality route?

That being said, I haven't played the game, so I can't judge anything there. I agree that it's a good thing you don't use that omnipresent starter kit. Admittedly, it would be strange to use considering you likely got entirely different mechanics :D but yeah...

Well, I meant it purely from a "if there's going to be a pokemon fangame, it might as well be original" viewpoint. Whether or not there should be fangames is a different matter  I think it's better to see an original fangame than another of the cookie-cutter pokemon games out there, at least.

It's not so much a "non-Pokemon" environment. It's similar to the world in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, which feature talking Pokemon and no trainers. There's also the Pokemon Ranger games that have a different environment. There are other types of Pokemon game apart from the usual "catch Pokemon, beat the Elite 4" type. I wanted to make my original story, that's all.

Thanks for looking though, and thanks for trying, Wyatt! Do let me know if you play more.

I haven't downloaded the demo, but I have to say that I really like the color scheme you're using in the screenshots. Your hand drawn art work, the battle backgrounds, and sprites all match very well. Also love your menu borders. If I play it I'll post additional impressions. :)

I also don't see anything wrong with the premise of the game, playing as the cute monsters sounds more appealing to me than digital hoarding.
