How could we improve your HBGames Experience

I'm afraid Icon area will get too crowded. So I wonder if we should retire some to make room. Or add Category Tabs.

These are my favourite. The rounded glass for the last two PS4 options are very early 00s in style and I'm not a fan of lacking colour.
The Steam could with with colour. I think I'd add in the icon gradient from lower left to upper right #146e9e to #061939 (additively blended on a layer above).

I think merging the icons would be best. Replace Wii with Nintendo, Xbox360 with Xbox, PS3 with PS.

Actually now that I look at them there's a lot that could be done with the post icons. Maybe we should get them all in-line with a single design pattern and remove ones that don't fit with the new style.

All those RPG Maker versions can probably become [RPG Maker MV], [RPG Maker VX/A], [RPG Maker Classic] (including XP - yeah it's old get over it). The RPG Maker specific resources can be changed to non-specific [Models&Textures], [Illustrations], [Sprites], [Icons&UI], [Music&Sounds]. Maps could probably become [Level Design]. Could do with a [Writing] icon too. Replace [Workshop] with [Showcase] perhaps (maybe that loses the intention of workshop threads?).
Get rid of Demo, Crap, Action, Amazing, Analyze, Baw!, Breeze (Wow that's an old one), BRB, Bye, Classic, Done.
In The News can merge with Discuss to become just [Discussion].
Download through to Muffin can go. Revamp the HBGames. NSFW is pretty much a requirement for adult content, I think we should update that one to be more neutral. NSFW threads should be using this one.
Old Stuff -> [Retro]. Keep Photos. PS3 -> [PS].
Get rid of Pokemon through to TV Shows (specific game franchises and media should be covered by [Discussion] I think).
Wii -> [Nintendo]. Windows -> [PC].
Get rid of WIP.
xbox360 -> [Xbox]
Remove everything after xbox360.

For iOS and Android, I think an [Apple] and [Android] should suffice. The [PC] section should cover Mac and Linux, but if it's Mac only then an [Apple] icon should suffice. As much as I want Linux to have its own icon, I think it should be merged into [PC].

.rb and script should probably become [Coding]. Personally, I'd have separate languages for each game engine, but that's more work that's probably unnecessary when generic Coding covers it all.
Any games for old consoles would go under [Retro].
Multiplatform projects and projects on platforms that don't deserve to exist (Windows Phone) can go under a [Game] icon.

The engines besides RPG Maker could do with some thinking. [Custom Engine] would be good for engine work. [Unity] should stay (update the style) and [Unreal] added. C2 is popular still so that should probably be updated.

Engine post icons should be for discussing engines, rather than showing off projects made with those engines (which should be under the platform they're targeting or just [Game]). So along the lines of [Game], rather than other engine or listing loads of engines it should just be [Engine]. That would save the work required constantly adding icons for new engines, like how merging platforms into their brands removes the work required to keep them updated.
^- All that's less of a tweak and more of a day's work and I'm not sure how appreciated it would even be; would be a tidying up chore.

Like this?

I'm ok with merging console icons for space. But I think we should keep the older engine icons around for posterity, since they're being used somewhere. Although, I'd be willing to give them a new look.

edit: few more

I could be crazy. But we must have had a Nintendo Icon like this before the Wii, right?

I'd ask you this then: when is the last time you were punished in any way?
Exactly. Lawless peace doesn't work with everyone. This is the lesson. I'm %100 positive it would have just been me being punish as always. You gotta be Fair. That's the problem. I highly doubt fairness can happen. It's why we're lawless currently... Not wanting to deal with the problem could be a factor as well. I dunno.

However, the focus of consequences is always directed at me alone, never those who escalate the problems. Nothing ever happens to them. A desolate location called   did a similar scenario to me, and they suffered for it. Still to this day I dunno who avenged me, but I surely enjoyed it. Karma?

And when is the last time we even had a rage quit? 2009?
Insufficient data, but I'm sure it's around 2013 according to some sources I won't reveal. It's an estimate, but surely beyond 2009. Some rage quits can actually happen silently... Some people were actually smart enough not to give you guys what wanted. An explosive exit.

If this place ever becomes extremely popular again, just be fair to everyone. Don't exclude people from punishment just because you know them. That is called corruption. Dont have field day roasting a person after they leave. Again, good luck.
Lol you need to get over this self-victimization you're doing, I'm newer to the site than you are and a lot of people don't exactly have a high regard of me, I just don't say stupid shit very often, and I'm open to feedback. You take almost everything people say as an offence, which is why punishing people for offending you (which is really easy to do from my limited experience) has been so often neglected.

If we banned everyone just because they managed to offend you pretty much only Strawberri and Spoo would even be here, still.

I've been harassed (though not intent-fully maliciously) like you take people do to you, but I just spit it back and let people know it ain't gonna really get to me.

I've also had Hi Poyion and Jason call me out for being rude, which was fair enough, because I was being rude.

And wow! Our last rage-quit was over three years ago??

They have those on RMN basically weekly. I think we'll be fine.

There's also the fact that a lot of us are British - most of us, actually - and Brits tend to have a tongue in cheek, self deprecating, pokey sense of humour that doesn't translate well into other audiences. I mean, when an American or Canadian introduces their friend they probably wouldn't introduce them as a right cunt.

I'd say that's patronising or demeaning to Americans but I don't mean it that way; there's somewhat of a culture clash that makes programs like Ellen unwatchable. Even worse when it's in text though as you don't get any nuances, irony, sarcasm, or little tiny inflections that one might think in their head when typing stuff.

Like "I didn't mean that." Could sound angry. Could sound plain. Could sound jokey and sarcastic.

I've always said the rules here could be simplified to Don't Be a Dick. If you're posting stuff to engage in conversation, that's fine. If you're posting to be a dick you're doing it wrong. And I think that we're a group of friends, even when new friends join us, so instead of dishing out warnings and bans and time in the brig, a friendly "hey can you not do that? thanks" can and does help.

Also you don't see anything that goes on outside of the forums. I don't find it particularly useful to attack people in public. I have a few times asked folk to tone it down here when talking to them outside of the forums. Although granted that was probably some years ago when this place was active enough to require such moderation. Also remember that you don't see warnings (I don't think, anyway); I know that Jason definitely has warnings on his profile and he's always acted courteously when given them.

When we had rage quits we (the site) were legitimately being dicks to people and it's not something I'm proud of.

I'd also say, to a few people around the site who feel like there is some kind of hostility against them, there probably isn't. Don't read too much into anything. I think everyone here is swell and I think everyone here thinks everyone is swell too.

Topic icons: while I'm not going to hard code categories because it'd take too long for something so small, it'd be easy enough to say something like "add a line break after x icon and put a category name in" so that it looks like there's categories.

That particular word as an associate banter term is more of an Australian thing than a British thing. Here it's more likely we'd introduce our best friend as a "right dick-head" than anything else.

Anything to split up the topic icons would be great as they're just a soup at the moment.

Man, not a single new game on the homepage has a game logo. I guess I didn't advertise it enough. I'll make some for them until the creators send me better.

I'm kind of used to Brits and their sarcasm. Also, I can be darn right sarcastic myself. :D

This is true... I've had SO MANY warnings, been banned a few times too, one of them was actually a permaban yet here I am!

I think the main issue is that people aren't really interested in game development here.

I don't know, I think it's more like; we ARE interested in game development... we're just really lazy and can't be arsed making anything, except the few people that actually do make stuff, lol.

I actually spend probably 20-40 hours a week doing gamedev in my spare time, but I more or less stopped posting about it here because it seemed like almost no one cared.

We're too desperate and we know you'll stick around, lel! You're also a pretty cool guy most of the time.

This place is definitely high in british concentration as of these recent years, I'm personally from Australia and as a result I understand entirely the sort of humor Amy refers to, most of us are descended from convicts from England or somewhere in Britain.

And Amy is definitely right in that this place did use to have a higher concentration of dickiness, through it's recession came value for what remained.

As for things to make the forum cool, Having to ask to get a game logo added each time I upload a game (in the completed games section), or just wanna rebrand it seems a bit silly, maybe we can get a widget to make that feature manual?

Beyond that, the way images aren't auto-scaled is a bit tiresome to deal with.

Both of those may be more effort than your willing to go to, just my throws in the ring.

I say I'm newer, truthfully I've been around since 2008 but I was pretty inactive back then, mostly I just made an account to hound Dargor about his large party script.

Didn't become the active (as one allows themselves to get) fella most of you know me as until 2013 or something.

I did try to implement image scaling a while back, not sure why it never worked. I'll add it to my todo list.

The reason I didn't make image uploading automatic is that a few years ago I made a whole website for this place with an image uploader, resource manager, and various other things. It was well used and I thought it was quite nice, but I was naive and didn't know as much as I should have done about web security - we got hacked and lost everything.

So I guess a lack of confidence in my own abilities is holding us back somewhat.

We had an integrated MediaWiki, integrated *chan style image board, pastebin and everything.

In fact goddamn I was proud of that site. I can't believe I lost it all.

Anyway the long term plan was to convert to Xenforo, Venetia bought the software and everything. But somehow it never happened. That would have given us so much functionality.
